UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT BRINDLE, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES POHLMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
SPRING-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,833, dated May 15, 1894.
Application filed May 2, 1893. Serial No. 472,743. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT BRINDLE, of the city of Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gate-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a gate hinge, with a spring, protected from the weather by means of a covering, which will cause the gate to close when opened and to remain shut when closed.
It is further my objectto provide a hinge that will accomplish the said results and be at the same time, simple in construction, inexpensive and durable.
The invention consists of two hinge leaves, each provided with a semi-cylindrical portion having a round top and bottom piece, the semi-cylindrical portion, top and bottom of one leaf, being smaller than, and adapted to fit into, the similarly constructed portion of the other leaf. A pin, passing vertically through the tops and bottoms of both, joining the two parts, and a spiral spring coiled about said pin within the box or cover so formed, one end of said spring being attached {0 (t ne leaf and the other end to the opposite In the accompanying drawings in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a front View of hinge, with dotted lines, showing position of pin, spiralspring and leaves of hinge when joined to- Fig. 2 is a sectional view of my hinge, through the line X X; and Fig. 3 is a View representing the back of the hinge showing the inclosed spring and method of connecting the same to leaves of hinge.
In the drawings -A A--- are the leaves of hinge; --B- and -B'-- the semi-cylindrical portion having round tops and bottoms C-(l; -D- the pin or pivot connecting the two leaves of hinge, and -E-- is a spiral spring coiled about the pin -D- one end of which is secured to one leaf and the other end of which is secured to the opposite leaf of hinge. The cylindrical portion --B- of the leaf -A is provided with round top and bottom -=-C- and is larger than the corresponding semi-cylindrical portion -B of the leaf -A'--. The semi-cylindrical portion -B- of the leaf A is provided with a round or circular top and bottom -C- and is adapted to fit snugly into the corresponding portion of the leaf The tops and bottoms of the cylindrical portions of the hinge are provided with openings to receive the pin D which passes through them thus connecting the two leaves of the hinge.
When the leaves of the hinge are connected by the pin -D- the semicylindrical portions together form an inclosure as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Coiled about the pin -D-- in this inclosure is the spiral spring E-, completely protected from the weather by reason of the construction of the semi-cylindrical portion of the hinge, provided with the top and bottom -C--. One end of the spring is attached or secured to the leaf -A and the other end to the leaf -A', the tension of the spring being adapted to keep. the gate shut when closed.
My hinges being secured to a gate they operate as follows, the gate being closed, as shown by the drawings, when it is opened the semi-cylindrical portions of the hinges revolve or turn on the pivot --D- the smaller cylindrical portion -B-- passing inside the cylindrical portion Bof the opposite leaf, when if the gate is let go it is forced to close by the tension of the spring -E-. The round top and bottom O'- of the semi-cylindrical portion -B' of the leaf -A-, fits snugly between the top and bottom C- of the cylindrical portion --B- but only a bination with my hinge leaves constructed as shown and I may also construct my hinge leaves in other forms so as to have an inclosure in which the spring, used is protected from the weather, so that with this descrip tion of my invention What I claim is? In a spring-gate hinge, the combination wlth two leaves, each leaf provided with a semi-cylindrical extension having a top and bottom, one of said extensions being smaller 5 than, and adapted to partially turn inside of,
the other, of a connecting pin passing through the tops and bottoms of said extensions and a spring all constructed substantially as shown and described and for the purpose specified.
ROBERT BRINDLE.
