Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug.. let, 193W..
Application filed February 21, 191'?. Serial No. 150,189.
To all whom if may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES Born, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Hinges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in spring hinges and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character capable of automatic return; and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved spring hinge especially adapted for use in connection with a gate or the like and which permits the gate to be swung in either direction and which also serves to automatically return the gate to closed position irrespective of the direction in which the gate may be swung.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved spring hinge whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, Vwherein-- Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating a spring hinge constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view taken through one end of the bar as herein employed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, P denotes a ground post of any ordinary or preferred type and adjacent the opposite ends of Said post P are arranged the vertically disposed brackets B anchored or secured to the post P in any desired manner as indicated at 1. i
2 denotes a vertically disposed bar of predetermined length and which is secured to the opposite end portions of each of the brackets B through the medium of the clamping members 3.
The opposite end portions of the bar 2 are provided with the axially disposed recesses or sockets 4, the outer or open ends of which being closed by the removable caps 5.
Arranged within each of the recesses or sockets 4i and disposed longitudinally thereof is the shaft 6 mounted for rocking movement, and secured to said shaft 6 intermediate its length is the perpendicularly related arm 7 extending through the transversely disposed slot produced in the bar 2 at substantially the longitudinal center of the recess or socket 4l. The outer end portion of the arm 7 is suitably secured to the gate G.
Encircling the shaft 6 at opposite sides of the arm 7 are the coil springs 8, said springs being reversely coiled and having their inner end portions disposed through the shaft 6 while the opposite end portions of said springs 8 are disposed through the bar 2 or otherwise secured thereto. By this arrangement it will be perceived that irrespective of the direction in which the gate Gr may be swung the springs t will serve to automatically return said gate into closed position.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a spring hinge constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
In combination, a supporting member, a bar held by said supporting member and provided with axially disposed recesses in its opposite end portions, a shaft rotatably mounted within each of said recesses and disposed longitudinally of the bar, an arm detachably secured to the shaft substantially at the longitudinal center thereof and extending exteriorly of the bar, said bar being provided with :L transversely disposed slot In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my through which the arm extends, 2L gate with signature in the presence of two Witnesses. which said arm is engager, and springs encircling the shaft at Opposite sides of the JAMES BOYD' 5 arm, said springs being reversely coiled and Vitnesses:
having their inner ends secured tO the shaft HORACE COOPER, and their Outer ends to the bar. LORENZO WEBBER.
