DOOB SPRING. APPLICATION FILED APR. m 1918.

UNITE snares earner carton.
HOFF M. MANSAGER OF COLTON, SOUTH DAKOTA.
DOORSPRII\TG.
Application filed April 17, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I-Iorr M. MANSAGER, acitizen of the United States, residing at Colton, in the county of Minnehaha and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Springs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in door springs and it is -an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which serves effectually to maintain a door in either open or closed position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved door spring whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating a door spring constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position;
Fig. 2 is a view partly in longitudinal section and partly in plan of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1 with the door in closed position; and
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the door in open position.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings W denotes a wall provided with a door opening 0 and coacting with the opening 0 .is the door D mounted for swinging movement in a horizontal plane. M denotes a substantially L-shaped member having the free end portion of the foot 1 thereof pivotally engaged as at 2 with the jamb J with which the door D is hingedly connected.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented A110. 2'7, 1918.
Serial No. 229,159.
The stem 3 has secured to the outer end portion thereof a retractile member R herein disclosed as a conventional coil spring and the opposite or outer end portion of the member R is secured to the outer end portion of the door D.
The member M and spring R are arranged in substantially a horizontal plane. The stem 3 of the member M is also inclined in the same general direction in which the foot 2 extends with the outer 01' free end portion of the stem in substantially horizontal alinement with the outer end portion of the foot 1.
Until the door D is swung beyond its center the member R and the retractile member H serves to automatically return the door to closed position. but when the door has passed beyond the center, said member serves to throw the door to its full open position and which opening movement is limited by the member M dependent upon the length of the foot 1 and the angle of the stem 3 relative to the foot 1.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a door spring constructed in accordance with my inven-- tion is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
In combination with a support and a member hingedly connected therewith, a substantially L-shaped member having its foot hingedly engaged with the support and moving in the same general direction as the first named member, and a retractile member secured to the free end portion of the stem of the L-shaped member and to the first named member at a point adjacent the outer end thereof, the stem of the L-shape member being inclined in the same general In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my direction in which the foot of the member signature in the presence of twowitnesses. extends, the stem of the L-shnpe member HOFF M. MANSAGER. contacting with the hinged member when Witnesses: 7
said hinged member is at the limit of its FRANK J. SoHUnLLnR,
open position. TOM LARSON.
