Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1906.
Application filed July 24,1906. Serial No 327,577.
To (all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLLIE WV. Form, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Crab Orchard, in the county of Lincoln and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
' The pivot-point 4 of the bracket 5 This invention relates generally to gates, and particularly to an improved mechanism for opening and closing the same.
The object of the invention is to provide an extremely strong, simple, durable, inexensive, and thoroughly-efficient mechanism adapted to be operated from either gate by any suitable lever mechanism and also adapted to open and close a gate in an easy and positive manner, as well as to hold it locked securely either in closed or opened osition.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of the inventionor sacrificing any of its advantages. 5
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, the figure is a perspective view of a gate constructed in accordance with the invention.
The reference-numeral 1 indicates a gate, which may be of any suitable form and con struction. The gate 1 is pivotally connected in any suitable manner with a gate-post 2. Pivotally connected with the gate 1, as indicated at 3 1, is an approximately V-shaped bracket 5, which preferably consists of a flat bar of metal bent into the desired shape. is located in close proximity to the gate-post 2, as shown. The Vshaped bracket 5 on the side of its bent portion nearest the gate-post 2 is provided with an integral depending leg 6, which is adapted to rest upon the ground, as shown, so as to limit the downward movement of the bracket 5 and prevent it from falling below a horizontal position. Loosely pivoted upon the outer portion of the bracket 5 on the side of the bend opposite the leg 6, as indicated at 7, is a straight link 8, the opposite end of which is bent slightly, as indicated at 9, and pivoted at 10 upon a support 11, which preferably is in the nature of a side of a short post driven into the ground adjacent the gate-post 2.
The reference-numeral 12 designates a rod turned into eyes 13 at its ends, of which the lower one is connected with an apertured lug 14 on the link 8 at about the middle thereof The upper eye is connected with links 13, that are in turn connected with levers 16 of the actuating mechanism by the eyebolts 17. The actuating mechanism may be of any approved construction, the lever 16 thereof ex tending in the usual manner to the opposite side of the gate, so that the latter may be opened or closed from either side thereof. It will be noted that the lug 14 is arranged on the side of the link 8 opposite from the bracket 5, so as not to interfere with the depending leg 6 as the link and bracket fold up. The integral depending leg 6 of the bracket 5 constitutes an exceedingly effective means of supporting the joint between the link 8 and bracket 5, so as to prevent the same from breaking downward or descending below a horizontal position, while at the same time permitting said joint to be broken upward whenever it is necessary to open or close the g to.
It will be obvious that by drawing upward upon the flexible element 12 the link 8 will act upon the \l-shaped bracket 5 so as to swing the gate to opened or closed position. Furthermore, it will be apparent that when the gate has been entirely opened or closed the link 8, together with the bracket 5, will hold the gate securely in such position, whereby accidental opening or closing of the gate will be prevented and the necessity of using latches or locks for holding the gate in closed position will be avoided. Moreover, the use of the mechanism of the present invention effectually avoids the necessity of using a second gate-post containing a stop for limiting the outward movement of the gate, as it will be apparent that the outward movement of the gate will be limited by the link 8 and bracket 5 when the gate is in closed position.
The improved mechanism of this invention is strong, simple, durable, and inexpensive in construction, as well as thoroughly eflicient in operation.
The flexible element 12 preferably is connected with the link 8 about midway between its ends, as shown, and extends through an opening in one side of said link, the flexible element being provided with a knot to retain it in place. By this arrangement the flexible element secures an extended leverage on the link 8, and conse uently it is not necessary to draw the flexi le element 12 upward as far as would be necessary if it were secured at the point 7. By passing the end of the flexible element 12 through the link 8, as described, said element is prevented from interfering with the proper movement of the link 8 or from becoming twisted or entangled therewith.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a gate, of 'a bracket pivotally connected with said gate, a depending supporting-leg carried by said bracket and arranged to rest on the ground when the gate is closed, a support, and a link pivotally connected with said support and said bracket.
2. The combination with a gate, of an approximately V-shaped bracket pivotally connected with said gate and consisting of a flat bar of metal bent to the desired shape and having an integral depending supporting-leg adapted to contact at its lower end with the ground, a support in the nature ofa short post, and a link pivotally connected with said support and with said bracket on the side of the bent portion thereof opposite said supporting-leg.
3. The combination with a gate, of a bracket pivotally connected therewith, a support, a link on one side of the bracket and pivoted on the support, a hinge connection between the link and bracket, a depending leg at the hinge connection, an actuating mechanism including a connecting-rod, means on the side of the link opposite from the bracket for. connection with the said rod and arranged to permit the bracket and link.

4. The combination with a gate, of a bracket pivoted on the gate, a link hinged to the bracket adjacent the corner thereof, a support on which the link alone is hingedly mounted at the end thereof opposite from the bracket, a depending leg adjacent the point of connection between the link and bracket for supporting both above the ground and in line with each other to hold the gate locked in closed position, and a connecting-rod arranged to fold and unfold the bracket and link for opening and closing the gate.
