GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 696,559, dated April 1, 1902. Application led December 9,1901. Serial No. 85,247. (No model- To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that l, ELIAS GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Casey, in the county of Clark and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in folding and swinging gates; and it consists in the provision of means whereby the gate may be easily folded into a vertical position, means being provided to house the inner pivotalends of the gate, which are connected by means of a spring, and the provision of a cover which automatically closes over the pivotal ends of the gate when the gate is shut or in a horizontal position.
The invention will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claims, and is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form apart of this application, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a view showing my improved gate as closed. Fig. 2 is a View in side elevation, showing a portion of the boxing on which the pivoted ends of the gate are held as broken away, the gate being shown as partially open. Fig. 3 is a detail View showing the gate open.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a housing for the gate, comprising a boxing having three closed sides, and B designates a pivotal pin on which the lower strip C of the gate :is mounted. A similar pivotal pin D, mounted in the opposite walls of the boxing, carries the upper parallel strip E of the gate, and F designates the pickets of the gate, which are pivoted in a parallel relation to each other.
G designates a gate-post or hollow boxing,
in which the free end of the gate is held when horizontal, the gate being held in this position by means of a catch of any suitable construction. To the inner end of the strip C is connected the lower end of the spring K, the upper end of which spring is secured to a strap L, which in turn is fastened to the upper end of the segment L, which is secured to the inner end of the strip E. This spring is normally under tension when the gate is open, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings, and when the latch at the free end of the gate is released the tension of the spring will draw down upon the strap N, which will cause the strip E to turn upon its pivotal point into avertical position, and as said strip E turns into an upright positionthe pivotal connections of the pickets with the lower strip will cause the latter to also turn into an upright position, the two strips assuming the relations shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
Hinged to the top of the boxing A is a cover M, which has a link Q connecting the same with the strip E, whereby as the gate opens into an upright position said cover will be thrown back into avertical position and when the gate closes said cover will be drawn. down and cover the upper end of said boxing, as will be readily understood.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a gate constructed in accordance withmy invention will be simple in construction and operation, and by reason of the adjustment of the spring the gate may be readily opened, and the pivotal parts and springconnecting the strips of the gate will be housed from the elements, and a lgate is produced which presents an attractive appearance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A tilting and folding gate, comprising a hollow boxing open on one side, pivotal pins mounted in the opposite faces of said boxing, strips mounted on said pins, a curved segment secured to one of said strips, a spring fastened at its lower end, to the lower one of said strips, astrap fastened to the upper end of said segment and having connection. with the upper end of the spring, and means oontween said top and one of said strips, as set neoted to the gate, for automatically opening forth. 1o and closingthe top of said boxing, as set forth. l In testimony whereof l hereunto affix my 2. A tilting gate, comprisingaboxing open signature in presence of tWo Witnesses. 5 on one side, strips pivotally mounted within ELIAS GRAHAM.
said. boxing, spring connections between the Witnesses: pivotal ends of said strips, a hinged top to B. F. NEAL,
said boxing, and vpivotal link connection be- ROSS LEE.
