ISAAC 1\T. GRAHAM AND JAMES G. DULA, 0F DEERFIELD, VIRGINIA.
GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 14, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ISAAC N. GRAHAM and JAMES Gr. DULA, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Deerfield, in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gates, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide simple and reliable means for open: ing and closing a gate from opposite sides thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide simple means for operating the latch and for swinging the gate from opposite sides thereof.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which the figure is a perspective view of a gate provided with means for operating the same made in accordance with the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the post to which the gate is hinged, and 2 is the latch post. The gate consists of the uprights 3, 4 and the horizontal bars or rails 5 and 6. The gate is connected to the post 1 by means of hinges 7 A latch comprising a sliding bolt 8 mounted in a guide 9 engages the post 2 at its outer end, and connected to its opposite end is a cord or wire link 10, said cord extending through an opening 11 in an arm 12, said arm being secured to the post 1 and extending at right angles thereto. lVhen the lever 16 or 16 is released the combined weight of their inner ends communicate movement to the link 10, and by reason of the resiliency due to its shape, which is bowed as represented in the drawing, serves as a spring retainer for the latch bolt 8, and holds the latch in the keeper on the post 2. The link 10 is connected at its outer end to a staple 13 attached to the lever 16. The lever 16 and the oppositely disposed lever 16 are connected by means of a sliding bolt 14, said bolt extending through the lever 16 and through a slot 15 in the lever 16*. The levers 16 and 16 are pivoted one to each post 17 disposed at opposite sides of the gate, said levers being pivoted upon the bolts 18 and provided with a handle 19.
The operation of the invention may be briefly described as follows :-In operating the gate the loop or handle 19 is pulled downward to raise the inner end of the lever 16 or 16*. The initial movement of this lever slides the latch 8 out of its engagement with the post 2, and a further movement of said lever swings the gate upon the hinges 7 It is to be understood that either one of the levers 16 or 16 will operate the gate.
Our invention is simple in construction, may be readily applied to any gate, can be installed at slight cost and will operate smoothly and efficiently for its purpose.
We claim 1. A gate opener and closer, comprising a sliding latch bolt on the gate, posts disposed on opposite sides of the gates, operating levers pivoted to the posts and slidably connected at their inner ends, a resilient member connected to one of the operating levers and to the latch bolt, and a guide on the gate post for the resilient member.
2. A gate opener and closer comprising a latch bolt slidably mounted on the gate, posts disposed on opposite sides of the gate, operating levers pivoted on the posts, one of the levers carrying a bolt, and the other of the levers provided with a slot to receive the bolt, an arm on the post of the gate provided with an elongated aperture, and a resilient curved wire link connected to the latch bolt and to the inner end of one of the operating levers and passing through the elongated slot of said arm.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
