FARM-GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1, 1914.
Application filed April 13, 1914. Serial N0. 831,552.
To all w71 om it may concern I Be it known that I, FRnMoN'r MILLER, citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in farm gates, and the primary object is to provide means for opening the gate from various dierent points, at least three being provided.
A further object is to provide means for utilizing the same lever or levers and motion of levers both for opening and closing the gate.
A still further object is to provide a gate of such construction that it will stay in either open or closed position, in whichever position it is placed.
lVith these objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in perspective, showing the gate closed; Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing it open; Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
A represents the main post, to which the gate 1 is hinged. An arm 2 extends across the top of the post at right angles to the gate when it is in its normal position. Right and left hand levers 3 and 4 respectively are pivotally supported in hangers 5 and 6, depending from opposite ends of the bar 2. Still a third hand lever 7 is fulcrumed on a post 8, and the inner ends of all three of the levers 3, 4, and 7 are loosely connected together, and to a rod 9, and the latter is pivotally connected at its lower end to a weighted lever 10. This weighted lever 10 is preferably V-shaped, and pivoted at one end to the posts 11, 11, and at the outer end is loosely connected by a link 12 to the gate. The weighted lever has an arm 13 secured thereon, and projecting beyond it on both sides, which constitutes a stop for the support of the lever on either side of its center.
Copie: of this patent may be obtained for In the operation of the gate, the nearest lever is simply depressed, which bears downwardly thereon, or giving a downward jerk to one of the poles 14. This may be done from an automobile, wagon, load of hay, or horseback, without dismounting, so that the gate is either opened or closed without the inconvenience of running forward or back to open or close it.
hen a lever is depressed by a sudden jerk, the weighted lever is lifted, and thrown across its dead center. This either opens or closes the gate, as the case may be, and the weighted lever with the link which connects the gate, constitute a toggle joint, which locks the gate closed when closed, and open when open.
More or less slight changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the various parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, hence I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction herein set forth, but:
I claim:
The combination with two posts andan arm connected to one of the posts, a gate hinged to said last-mentioned post, of levers, hangers pivotally connected to said arm and levers, whereby the levers are capable of a longitudinal movement, a pivoted weighted lever consisting of two members, a link connected to the gate and having the other terminal thereof loosely received between said weighted lever members, means connecting said members and link together, another lever connected to the other post, a rod connected to one of the members of the weighted lever, and means connecting the inner ends of the several levers and rod together, whereby upon the actuation of any of the levers, the weighted lever will be operated for swinging the gate.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
