To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EBENEZER GRIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spieler= ville, in the county of Logan and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention has relation to gates; and the object is to provide a gate which may be unlatched and swung open by a person on foot, horseback, or in a vehicle and closed and latched after he has passed through.

A further object of my invention is to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive gate capable of performing its functions in a convenient and efficient manner.

With these objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated my invention in perspective, showing in full lines the position of parts when the gate is closed and latched and in dotted lines the position of parts when the gate is unlatched and swung partly open.

In the drawing, 1 and l denote gate-posts; 2, the gate hinged to the post 1 and provided with the pivoted latch 3, that engages a fixed catch 4, secured to the post 1. This latch 3 is provided with a spring 5, that exerts its energy to force the latch downward. Both gate-posts are preferably extended quite a distance above the gate, and pivoted to the post 1 is a bell-crank lever 6, one end, 6, of which projects downwardly parallel with the post 1, to which it is pivoted, and the other end of which, 6", projects laterally above the gate and beyond the opposite post 1.

7 denotes an actuating-lever pivoted centrally to the upper end of the post 1 and provided at its free end with operating-handles 8. The arm G of the bell-crank lever is connected with the actuating-lever by the staple 9, and the arm 6 of the bell-crank lever is secured to the lower end of the gate by a staple 11. operating-lever is rocked up or down the gate will be swung open or closed, according to the direction of movement of said lever.

12 denotes a latch-trip pivoted to the post 1 and having one end projecting outward below the free end of the latch. This trip is connected to the actuating-lever by a pivoted link 13.

In operation when one of the operating-handles is drawn downward or the other pushed up the latch-trip will raise the latch from the catch and a further movement of the operating-handle will swing the gate outward, thus allowing a person on horseback or in a vehicle to open the gate Without dismountin g or leaving the vehicle, and after he has passed through the gateway he may close and lock the gate by a reverse movement of the operating-handle.

Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination with the gate-posts, a gate hinged to one of said posts, a latch pivoted to said gate, a catch secured to one of said posts and adapted to be engaged by said latch, a bell-crank lever pivoted at the upper end of one of said posts, a loose connection between the gate and the lower end of the bell-crank lever, a lever pivoted to the opposite post, a loose connection between said le- Ver and the other member of the bell-crank lever, a latch-trip pivoted to the post and adapted to engage the pivoted latch, a link connecting the trip with the actuating-lever, and handles connected to the free ends of the actuating-lever, substantially as set forth.
