SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 577,940, dated March 2, 1897.

Be it known that I, J OSEPH ASBERRY AN- THONY, a citizen of the United States, residing atParis, in the county of Henry and State of Tennessee, have invented a certain new, useful, and valuable Improvement in Gates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has relation to gates adapted to be opened, held open, and then closed without necessitating the operator to alight from his vehicle or horse; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the gate. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the rear end of the gate and attachments.
The perpendicular shaft 1 is journaled on the rear part of the gate. Said shaft is provided with the straight arm 2 and the anglearm 3. Both ends of the straight arm 2 are connected by a flexible connection with the rocker 4, pivoted to the gate. The other end of said rocker is connected with the gate-latch 5. One end of the angle-arm 3 is connected by connection 7 with the upper end of the lever 6. The other end of the angle-arm 3 is connected by connection 8 with the lower end of the lever 9. Said levers are suitably fulcrumed to supports one on each side of the gate. The upper end of the lever 9 is connected by the connection 10 with the lower end of the lever 6.
In operation the device works as follows: The operator approaches the lever 6 and pushes the lower end of the same forward. This causes the connection 7 to revolve the shaft 1, which in turn causes the rocker 4 to elevate the latch 5. Thus the gate is unlatched, and by pushing said lever still farther the gate is opened and the latch engages the catch 11. The operator then passes through the gate and pushes the lower end of the lever 9 forward, (by the opening of the Serial No. 545,3 (No model.)
gate the lower end of said lever having been brought toward the gate.) This lifts the latch and closes the gate. In approaching the gate toward lever 9 the same operation is performed as described. The lower end of the lever in all cases is pushed.
It will be observed that the end of the angle-arm 3 is always substantially at right angles to the operating connection. When the gate is closed, the end is substantially at right angles to the connection 7, and when the gate is open the other end of said arm is substantially at right angles to the connection 8. Thus the shaft 1 is always readily revolved, as it is impossible for it to assume a deadcenter.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a gate, of a post arranged adjacent to one end of said gate, said gate hinged to said post, a shaft loosely journaled to the gate and provided at its upper I end with two angle portions, said portions extending in different directions; posts or uprights arranged at opposite sides of the gate, operating-levers pivotally secured to said posts, connections secured to said levers and each directly connecting them to one of the angle portions of the shaft, posts or uprights arranged adjacent to the gate and provided with catches, a latch carried by the gate and adapted to engage with said catches when the gate is in its closed and open positions; horizontally-arranged connections connected at one end with the latch-operating mechanism; and rocker, alever secured to the shaft to the arms of which lever the opposite ends of said connections are secured, as set forth.
