GATE ATTACHM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 6d9,794, dated May 15, 1900.
Application filed February 21, 1900. Serial No. 6,079. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be itknown that LLEMUEL A. AsHBY,acitizen of the United States, residing at Lewistown, in the county of Fulton and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofi theinventiomsuch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to gate attachments.
The object of the invention is to provide a gate attachment which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensive of production, and one which may be easily and quickly applied toagate to permit of its being opened and closed by a person on foot, on horseback, or in a vehicle, and which will automatically lock the gate in either position.
YVith this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the operating-lever, and Fig. 4 is a similar View of the link.
In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
1 denotes the hinge-post, 2 the latch-post, and 3 the gate, hinged to the post 1. These parts may be of any wellknown or approved construction.
4 and 5 denote posts or standards. The post 5 has an upwardly-projecting arm 6.
7 denotes a block set into the ground and to which is swiveled to turn the head 8, having parallel arms 9. 1O denotes a lever, which preferably consists of two side pieces a a, the lower ends of which are pivoted between the arms of said swiveled head and the upper end of which is provided with a weight 12.
14 denotes a link pivoted to the gate at its forward end and extending through the side pieces of the lever and pivoted thereto.
15 denotes operating cords or wires which pass through pulleys carried by the posts a and through the double pulley carried at the upper end of the arm 6 and are connected to a bail 16, secured to the upper end of the lever.
In operation, assuming the gate to be closed and it being desired to open the same either from within or without, one of the operating cords or wires is drawn upon, thus elevating the upper end of the lever and swinging it backward, and after it has passed a vertical position the weight of the lever exerts its force to swing the gate entirely open, in which position it is held by the weight. After passing through the gate the person draws upon the operating cord or wire, which movement swings the lever in a reverse direction to that just described, thus closing the gate, in which position it will be seen that the lever and link are at adead-center with respect to each other and nearly at a dead-center to the path of movement of the gate, thus preventing the gate being opened by a person or animal pressing against the same.
In addition to the means above described for opening the gate, which means are particularly designed to be operated by persons within a vehicle or mounted upon horseback, I provide a lever 17, which is pivoted to the gate and within easy reach of a person on foot. To this lever is attached one end of a cord or wire 19, which passes through a pulley 20, secured to the gate, and has its other end attached to the plate 21, which is pivoted to the link and extends under the weight at the upper end of the lever. By pressing upon the lever the free end of the plate will be swung upward, thus raising the upper end of the lever, and thereby permitting the gate to be swung open and allow the person to pass through the same. After passing through the gate the weight will close the same and lock it in closed position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my improved gate will be readily apparent without requiring an extended explanation.
It will be seen that the device is simple of construction, that said construction permits of its manufacture at small cost, and that it is exceedingly-well adapted for the purpose for which is is designed.
Various changes in the form, proportion,
and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. Thecombination with a hinged gate and a swiveled head, of a lever having one end pivoted to said head, a link pivoted to said lever and having one end pivoted to the gate, a plate pivoted to the link and adapted to engage the lever andthrow it off its deadcenter, and means for actuating said plate, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a hinged gate and LEMUEL A. ASHBY.
