To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Ennns'r OCEAN, a cit-izen of the United States, residing at Osceola, in the county of St. Clair and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to gates, and is designed to provide a gate which will be locked in an open or closed position by the same means by which it is operated, thereby eliminating the necessity of catches or similar devices.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a gate in a closed position, illustrating the same locked open in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is an elevation of a gate locked in an open position; Fig. 3 is a section taken along lines 33 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the toggle whereby the gate is operated.
In the construction of the gate in accordance with the present invention, a usual gate post is provided having a gate of any clesirable structure hinged thereto, said gate adapted to bear against one surface of the oppositely disposed gate post. The upper rail of the gate has an extension formed thereon which projects behind the gate post to which the gate is hinged, said extension having pivotally connected thereto a link. The opposite terminal of the link is pivoted to a crank which is journaled and operates between two posts or bearings mounted at an angle to the gate post to which the gate is pivoted. Flexible members extend from said crank to posts spaced from said gate posts and provide means whereby the gate may automatically be opened and closed.
Reference being had more particularly to the drawings, 1O indicates a gate post having a gate 11 hinged thereto, the hinges 12 of said gate being located at one side of the center of said post. The post 10 is provided at its upper terminal with a rearwardly extending horizontal support 13. The free or Specification of Letters Patent.

swinging terminal of the gate is adapted to bear against each side of the gate post 14- and in no way swing past the same. The opposite terminal of the gate is provided with the extension 15 which projects in a direction normally parallel to the support- 13.
Located in alinement with the ate )ost arranged at an angle to said post is a pair of vertical standards 18 between which is pivoted acrank 19.
Located on a line arranged centrally with respect to the standards 18 is a pair of posts 20 and 20 one of said posts being located upon each side of the standards 18 and forms a bearing for the crank 19. The crank 19 is pivoted to a link or bar 21 which is provided with a depression or recess 22 in the under face of each terminal thereof. .The opposite terminal of the link 21 is provided with a hook 28 which is adapted to engage an eye carried by the inner terminal of the extension 15. Thus it will be seen that the extension 15 is connected to the crank 19 through the means of link 21. The crank 19 is loosely connected to the link 21 through the means of a collar around said crank and attached to said link, thus permitting the free end of the link a lateral movement when the gate is swung in either direction. An eye 24L is located on the link 21 adjacent to the crank 19 and has secured thereto a pair of flexible members 25 which extend upwardly and pass over the pulleys 26 mounted in the horizontal support 1.3. The terminals of these flexible members or ropes 25 pass over the pulleys 27 carried at the terminals of the horizontal supports 17 secured to the posts 16.
From the foregoing it will clearly be understood that the ropes or flexible members 25 exert a pull always at an angle to the link 21. Thus, should one of the ropes 25 have a pull exerted thereon when the gate is in the position illustrated in full lines in Fig. '1, the link 21 will move in the direction of the arrow A in Fig. 1, causing a push to be exerted upon the extension 15 and conthe catch or recess 22 formed in the link 21 sequently the gate to swing in the direction of the arrow B in said figure, and assume the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
- When the gate is in this position, that is, as
illustrated in dotted lines in Fig' 1, the depression 22 formed in the link 21 adjacent to the crank 19, engages the post and locks said gate in an open position. If it is desired to close the gate 11 a pull is exerted 'on either-of the ropes 25 which will raise the terminal of the link 21 carrying the crank 19.and cause the same to move in the opposite direction than that indicated by the arrow A in Fig. l and the gate to swing to a closed position. lVhen in this position adjacent to the crank 19 will engage the post '20? and prevent the gate from being opened unless a pull is applied to the rope 25.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent is:
In a device of the character described, the combination with a post, of a gate hinged thereto, a longitudinal extension fixed to the fiopies of this patent may be obtained for within the path of travel of said link andadapted to engage the shoulder 011 said link to hold the same against longitudinal movement when the gate is in its opened or closed position, and flexible elements secured to said link and adapted to lift said link out of locking engagement with said last mentioned posts and to open said gate.
