SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,840, dated March 15, 1881.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EZRA J. BOWEN, a citizen of the United States, resident at Onawa, in the county of Monona and State of Iowa,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures 'of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which the figure represents the device applied.

1 This invention relates to gate-hinges; and

it consists in the construction hereinafter specified.'

In the annexed drawings, A is a gate, B B the posts, and O the side bar.

Near-the top of one post, B, is located the eye 1), extending in the gateway, and a is an other eye, longer than eye b, and located upon the side bar, 0, of gate A, near the bottom.

D is a spring-bar, made fast at end d to the .2 5 top of side bar, 0, of gate A. It is bent at n, and turned down and passed through eyes I) and a, and, turned out, is made fast at end at to the bottom of post B. As the gate is opened it exerts a twisting action upon bar D, making a torsion-spring of the same, which operates to close the gate as soon as-the latter is released.

. By the construction shown the gate can be opened in either direction.

By putting the bar D in place while the gate 3 5 is open the said bar will be twisted when the gate is closed, and thus exert a force to hold the gate open when nnfastened. When this bar is used to close the gate no positive catch is needed, the spring holding it shut.

What I claim is The'post B, having an eye, b, near one end, and the gate A, having an eye, a, at theend of one side bar, in combination with the bar D, passed through eyes a and b, and fastened 4 5 at one end to post B and at the other to gate A, substantially as described.
