FREDERICK MEYERS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, AND MATTHIAS STOVEKEN, OF HOBO KEN, NEW JERSEY.
HOOK AND EYE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,612, dated May 8, 1894. Application filed July 27,1893. Serial No. 481,628. (No model.)
To a ZZ whom it may concern: I
Beit known that we, FREDERICK MEYERS, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, and MATTHIAS STOVE- KEN, residing at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, both citizens of the United States, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in hooks and eyes and the invention consists in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a face view of a hook and eye as applied to a garment. Fig. 2 is a detail view of a blank for a locking plate. 7 Fig. 3 shows the blank in advanced state of construction. Fig. 4 shows the blank further advanced. Fig. 5 shows the blank in its final shape. Fig. 6 isadetail view of a'hook. Fig. 7 is a detail view of an eye. Fig. 8 is a'section along so oc-Fig. 1.
In the drawings the letter A indicates a hook or hook portion and B is aneye or eye portion. The Hook portion has penetrating prongs 0 provided with shoulders D located toward the end or point portions of the prongs. The eye portion has penetrating prongs 0 having shoulders D similar tothe shoulders of prongs C.
The blank for the locking plate is cut or stamped to have a body or box portion E, (Fig. 2) acover portion F and a connecting strip or throat G. The sides of the throat G are cut and bent to form lips H (Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 8). The edges of the body portion E are bent to give the body a box like form, and the portion F is bent over to form a cover for the box as seen in Fig. 8. The spaces left at each side of the throat G by the bending of the lips II form eyes through which the prongs O or O can be passed into the box shaped plate E F, the lips H springing or snapping into engagement with the shoulders D or D so as to lock the prongs.
In Fig. 4 the prongs are shown in the platebefore the cover portion F is bent down to its covering position but it is understood that the prongs can be inserted also when the portion F is closed as seen in Fig. 8.
The hook and eye can be readily attached to the flaps or garment portions I K by passing the prongs C 0 through suitable portions L M of the flaps I K and then passing the box shaped locking plates E F onto the prongs so that the shoulders D D will be engaged by the lips H in the interior of the box shaped plates.
What we claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a hook and eye fastening, the combination with a pair'of penetrating prongs having shoulders near the extremities of their inner and adjacent sides, of a prong-locking device consisting of a plate bent into box shape and having the contracted throat G, two orifices arranged respectively at opposite sides of the throat for receiving the penetrating prongs, and diverging locking lips H extending from the opposite edges of said contracted throat inwardly into the box-shaped plate for en gaging the shoulders of the two prongs, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have hereuntoset our hands in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK MEYERS. MATTHIAS STOVEKEN.
Witnesses: I
