ATTACHMENT FOR BE DSTEADS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,301, dated May 1, 1894. Application filed June'3, 1893. Serial No. 476,534. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD BRULn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Neillsv1lle,1n the county of Clark and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvemen ts 1n Attachments for Bedsteads;

and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent1on,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7

My invention relates to a table or book support adapted to be attached to a bedstead, and

it consists of novel means for clamping the,

attachment to the bedstead and novel means for supporting the table or book rest and adustmg the same vertically and laterally; it also consists of a novel means for holding the book in an opened condition, and of certain other constructions and arrangements, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved table or book rest attachment, showing its general arrangement and construction. Fig. 2 is a side elevat1on of a portion of the attachment taken at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the top of the table or rest, the supporting rods and loops being shown by dotted lines, and Fig. 4 is a detail view'of the lamp or cuspidor bracket.

A in the drawings represents the side board or rail of a bedstead to which the attachment 1sclamped; B a vertical supporting and attachlng bar; 0 a vertically and laterally adustable table or book rest, and D a clamping devlce for securing the attachment to the bedstead. The attachment is secured to the side board of a bedstead by means of the clampmg device D, which consists of a casting 61 provided with perforated extensions d, d d and a toothed or ratchet portion 01 The vertical supporting bar B passes through the perforations d and into or through the perforation (Z and a thumb screw ol' is passed through the perforation d for clamping the under side of the bed rail.

E represents a link pawl which is pivoted in the block F and embraces and engages the ratchets d G represents a piece having a shoulder which is inserted betweenthe under side of the bed board or rail and the clamping screw 0Z Rubber or felt packing may be inserted between the piece G and the bed rail andthe block F and the bed rail to prevent marring said rail. When it is desired to attach the clamp to the bed rail, the block F carrying the pawl E is placed ontop of the bed rail and the pawl adjusted to the proper ratchet tooth and held in such position by tightening the thumb screw (i The clamp can be readily removed from the bed rail by loosening the thumb screw (1 disengaging the link pawl from the ratchet and raising it and the block F to the extent required, when the attachment can be readily slipped from the rail.

I consider this vertically adjustable pawl of great advantage, as it enables me to much more rapidly apply theattachment and remove it from the bed rail than where thumb screwsalone are employed 7 e H represents a support havinga preferably removable arm h and an under bracket h. The rear end of the support is provided with perforated extensions throughwhich'the Vertical rod B passes, the support being held at the desired point on the rod by the'thumb screw 71*. The under bracket h materially aids in supporting the table or rest 0 which is secured to the arm of the support. The

arm h is preferably removably secured in the support by the thumb screw h, by which means the arm can be readily removed when it is desired to separate the parts to compactly pack the same for shipment or for other purpose. The table or rest is provided on its under side with perforated ears or loops through which the arm H passes, by which construction the table is adapted to be adjusted laterally in the arc of a circle to the extent desired, by the thumb screw h The table or book rest is provided with a ledge c to prevent a bookor other article slipping off the same, and is also provided with a spring clamp I for holding a book open, as shown.

J represents a lamp bracket which can be slid to any point desired on the. vertical supporting rod and held in such position by the thumb screw j; and K represents a cuspidor bracket which can be similarly adjusted. J

The attachment'is very simple in its construction andoperation and will be found of great utility in a sick room.

It is obvious that the attachment can be applied to aohair Without varying the construction and arrangement of the parts.

What I claim as my invention is-- 1. In an attachment for bedsteads, the combination with a book support and its supporting rod, of a supporting clamp adjustably mounted on said rod and consisting of a rack portion, a clamping block sliding on the upper part of said portion and provided with a pivoted stirrup engaging said rack, a clampingblock sliding on the lower portion of said rack, and a clam ping screw mounted in an extension of said rack and adapted to actuate said lower clam ping block substantially as de- 1 scribed.

2. In an attachment for bedsteads, the combination of a vertical supporting rod, a book supporting bracket adj ustably mounted thereas described.
