To all whom it may concern.- 1 3e it known that I, WALTER G. BURNS, a cltlzen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in fruit jars.

The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and efficient air tight jar or vessel, preferably of glass and specially adapted to secure and preserve all kinds of fruits and wines from contact with the air by arranging an air excluding liquid between two threaded sealing caps inclosing the contents of the said jar.

My invention consists of a fruit jar of any desired size and made of any suitable material, preferably of glass, with ascrew threaded neck on which the outer sealing lid or cap is secured, and having a screw threaded annular rectangular flange or wall projecting from the inner surface of said neck and adapted to secure an inner sealing cap, the said neck having a suitable space between the said caps adapted to contain a proper quantity of water or other proper sealing liquid.

The novel feature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of its parts whereby a layer of water or other proper air excluding liquid can be interposed between the inner and outer sealing caps or lids.

The object of my invention is accomplished by the mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawings in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved fruit jar with the outer sealing lid or cap removed, and aportion of the inner sealing cap broken away to show the inner supporting flange or wall upon which the said inner cap is secured. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the upper part of my invention showing the threaded flanges or walls on the neck of the jar, the relative arrangement of the sealing caps and the interposed space for the sealing liquid.

Referring now to the drawings,Ais a fruit jar of the usual form, of any desired size and may be made of any proper material, but preferablyof glass, and has an externally threaded vertical annular flange or wall 6 on the neck a, Fig. 2. I

B is a threaded metallic cap adapted for adjustment on the flange or wall e in the usual and well known manner. Upon the top of r the said flange e is arranged an annular rubber washer b of well known construction, which is adapted to form an air tight joint when the cap Bis screwed down tightly thereon. The neck a of the jarA is also provided with the inwardly projecting rectangular flange or wall f, the vertical portion of which is also externally threaded. The said flange f is integral with the said neck and is of such a height as to leave a proper sealing liquid space E below the cap B, as seen in Fig. 2. The inner cap D of any proper material, but preferably of glass or porcelain, is also screw threaded and adapted for a water tight adjustment on the flange or wall f. The inner cap D is also provided with a horizontal transverse lug or flange d by means of which the cap may readily be adjusted into position or removed therefrom. The said inner cap D is also preferably somewhat thicker at its cen tral position to give it greater strength, as seen in Fig. 2. An annular washer g or rubber or other suitable elastic material is arranged upon the flange or wall f at the base of the vertical portion thereof, in such a man.- ner as to be compressed by the cap D when in position for use. The spaceEis thus made practically a water tight and air tight inclosure by means of the, caps B and D, and when the said space is filled with water or other air excluding liquid the contents of the jar A will be hermetically sealed and will be most securely and perfectly preserved.

The manner of using my improvement thus described is apparent, but briefly described is as follows: The jar A is filled with fruit in the usual manner to a point about even with the top of the flange f; the washergis placed in position thereon and the threaded cap D is adjusted upon said flange so as to tightly compress the said washer g, by means of the horizontal transverse lug or flange d. The space E is then filled with water or other sealing fluid which forms a perfect air excluder and also keeps the rubber washer g moist, and thus avoids all tendency to crack and shrink so commonin the ordinary way of using washers on fruit jars. The washerb is then placed in position on the top of the flange or wall 6 and the top capB is screwed down into position in the usual and well known manner. The contents of the jar A will thus be abso lutely secure from the eifects of the air and decomposition will be impossible.

Having thus described my invention and the manner in which the same is to be employed, what I claim as new and useful, and

ively, the said caps being so arranged upon the said walls as to aiford an intervening water tight space E adapted to contain water or other sealing fluid, all substantially as set forth and described.

2. In a fruit jar having a neck provided with an outer externally threaded vertical wall e, and a screw threaded internal annular wall f of less height than the said wall 6, in combination with a washer b adapted to be mounted upon the base of the wallf, with the threaded cap B adapted to be screwed upon the said wall e and the threaded cap D having a lug (1, adapted to be screwed upon the wall f, the said walls and the said caps being so constructed and arranged as to provide a sealing space E adapted to contain Water or other sealing fluid, all substantially as set forth and described.
