Description

PRESERVING JAR.
(Applicationled Jan. 12, 1899.)
fNo Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
CHARLES E. DE LANCEY, OF NEWPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
PRESERVlNG-JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,091, dated May 16, 1899. Application filed January 12, 1899. Serial No. 701,920. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. DE LANoEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Perry and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Preserving-.I ars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to preserving-j ars, and more particularly to that class known as the Mason type, in which a screw-cap and rubber gasket are employed to seal the jar; and the object is to provide the neck of the jar with a liange to encompass the outer edge of the gasket, and thereby prevent the latter from springing outwardly from under the flange of the screw-cap when the latter is being screwed home.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
The figure in the drawing is a vertical section of the upper portion of a preserving-jar embodying my invention.
In the drawing, l denotes the upper portion of the jar proper, and 2 the neck, which is externally threaded to receive the usual screwcap 3.
4 denotes a flange formed on the shoulder of the jar parallel and concentric with the neck 2, which formsan annular seat 5, the walls 6 6 of which are preferably parallel, as shown, and this seat forms a protection for the packing-ring or gasket 7, which preferably conforms to the bottom and the contiguous portions of the parallel walls of the neck and iiange.
The lower end of `the screw-cap is formed with a lateral bearing-ange 8, which is arranged to have a parallel bearing on the upper face of the gasket and at the same time Vsnugly flt between the parallel walls of the gasket-seat, so that when said cap is lirmly screwed home the gasket will be compressed to hermetieally seal the jar. It will thus be seen that the ileXible packing-ring or gasket is conned on all sides, and an increased degree of compression only serves to make the closure more secure or perfect.
It will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion,-and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
An improved preservingjar provided with an externally-threaded neck, formed with an annular horizontal imperforate seat 5, provided with continuous parallel walls 6 6; in combination, an elastic packing-ring, confined within said parallel walls, and an internally-threaded screw-cap 3, formed with a horizontal imperforate flange 8, adapted to bear upon said packing-ring parallel with said horizontal seat 5, substantially as shown and described.
` In testimony whereof I have hereunto set I my hand in,presence of two subscribing wit nesses.
CHARLES E. DE LANCEY.
