UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
ELWOOD AE. DOUGLASS, OF HANFORD, CALIFORNIA.
SCHOOL PROGRAM-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,301, dated March 13, 1894.
Application filed J'nly 29,1893.
To all whom, t may concern'.-
Beit known that I, ELWOOD E. DOUGLASS, a cltlzen of the United States, residing a't Hanford, in the county of Kings and State of California, have invented a new and useful School Program-Holder, of which the following 1s a specification.
My invention relates to a program holder or lndlcator for schools and lecture rooms, and 1t has for its object to provide a simple, lnexpensive, and efficient device which, when not 1n use, may be rolled up into a compact form to occupy a minimum amount of space f or the purpose of storing and for transportation, dre.; and, furthermore, to provide means whereby the blocks bearing letters, names, numerals, '&c., may be arranged and removed with facility. l
Further objects and advantages of my inventlon will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be partlcularly pointed out in the appended claim.
.In the drawings-Figure 1 isa perspective view of an indicator yor program holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the same.
Similar numerals of reference indicatecor-4 responding parts in both the figures of the drawings.
1. designates a back of iiexible material which may be provided with a surface color to contrast with the color of the letters, designs, numerals, or other figures which are carried by the insertible blocks hereinafter described. This back may be made of any sultable flexible material to permit of rolllng the device when not in use, and it is provided at its upper and lower ends with term1n al bars or strips 2 which act in the capaclty of stretchers to hold the intermediate back in operative position when extended, and serve as a core upon which to roll the same when not in use.
Secured to the surface of the back and arranged parallel with each other and at suitable intervals are the grooved strips or cleats 3 provided in their upper and lower edges with grooves 4. to receive the opposite edges of the insertible blocks 5 which carry the letters, numerals, &c. Said character-bearing blocks 5 are adapted to be inserted at the ends of the retaining strips or cleats and slid longitudinally therebetween until the de- Serial No. 481,887. (No model.)
sired positions are attained, and when the blocks are in position the indicator or holder is held in a rigid position, being prevented from rolling or folding by the engaged edges of the blocks and cleats. cleats are preferably provided with vertical lines 6 whereby the surface of the holder is divided into vertical columns 7 and upon the surface of the backing at the upper ends of the columns are arranged titles, names of classes, and other data to show the purpose .of the several columns and indicate the occupations of said classes during certain hours of the day, such hours being indicated in a.
column set aside for that purpose preferably, as indicated in the drawings, at the left hand side of the indicator or holder.
It will be understood that the marking and division of the surface of the indicator or holder may be varied Yto suit the purpose for which the chart is intended, the above marking being given to show the utility of the dev1ce.
Various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.v
Having described my invention, what I claim is- A portable indicator or holderfor school programs comprising a flexible back provided at its upper and lower extremities with stretchers, and having parallel spaced horizontallyv disposed retaining Astrips or cleats provided in their upper and lower edges with registering grooves arranged contiguous to the surface of the back, said back being adapted to be rolled to form a portable bundle, and insertible character-bearing blocks adapted to be removably fitted at their upper and lower edges in the grooves with which lthe strips or cleats are provided, and forming stiening pieces whereby' when said blocks are in place the indicator or holder is held rigid, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim thewfore oing as my own I have hereto affixed my signatu e in the presence of two witnesses.
ELWOOD E. DOUGLASS.
