To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, ABRAM R. NADEL, a citizen ofthe United States, `and resident of Dorchester, county of Suffolk, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Loose-Leaf Sketching- Pads, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings., is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts in each of theseveral views.

This invention relates to loose leaf sketching pads well adapted for artists uses, though having other and more general fields of usefulness. The invention is embodied in a simple and convenient case or holder for a number of superposed leaves or sheets adapted to be held therein-in a manner so as to permit sketching or other .data to be placed on the foremost one of said sheets or, leaves, and the sheets readily interchanged or removed, so that Aa filled sheet may be placed at the back of the pile or taken out as required. The invention also has to do with certain improved fittings associated with such a loose leaf pad whereby `.convenience and accuracy of sketching either landscapes, or objects of more or less geometrical form such as buildings is eX- pedited `and facilitated. To this end one important feature rof the invention consists in providing means for delimiting and segregating the particular -portion of an exterior field to be sketched from the rest of the landscape or vista so that ythe outlines to be produced can .be more readily determined and located. VIn accordance with a further feature of the invention I provide an improved fitting equipped with suitable scale ,graduations adapted to indicate along 4the edges of the sketching area on the sheet measurements that may be made to bear a certain definite ratio or relationship tothe dimensions of the object being sketched, such as the lines `of a building.. The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the v4invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description, and the distinctive features of novelty will be pointed out in 4the appended claims.

The case or holder of the present improved pad consists in a frame 10 preferably Vrectangular and oblong though the particular form shown is merely illustrative and not restrictive. This frame may be made of any suitable material having the requisite stiffness and strength, such as leather suitably reinforced if requisite, or artificial leather or reinforced canvas or other cloth, or in fact any suitable material ,having the required properties. This .frame preferably has a continuous back `11 likewise lrelatively stiff and affording a vsubstantial backing for the Apad of leaves held in the holder, so that sketching may be done at the front thereof. The front of the holder is cut away in its major central inner portion as indicated at 12 to expose the working area of the sheets contained in the holder, and one end ofthe holder may yalso be cut away on both front `and back as indicated at 13 to facilitate getting hold of the sheets to remove or interchange them. The holder may be of a thickness to hold any desired -number of the sheets vS.

In sketching it is often desirable and important to delimit and segregate the .par-

ticular field being sketched from vthe rest of the field ofvision and to bring it withinthe outlines of a definite angular border with reference to which the outlines of the 'objects being sketched may be referred. In accordance with the present invention I provide associated with my improved pad a fitting readily and quickly adjustable so as to provide a sight opening of any required size to take in a selective portion of the objective range, suchsight openingbe- .ing rectangularand adjustable S0 as to take in any particular object or group and be referablc either to the entire exposed sketching 4area of the pad or a certain selected portion thereof, at will. ATo this end I provide a sheet frame 13 of card-board, Celluloid, sti paper or the like of a size corresponding to that of the leaves held in the holder 10, and like said leaves slidable into and out of said holder. The sheet frame 13 has its major central portion cut away to afford a rectangular sight opening as indicated at 14. Cooperative with this sheet frame is a strip 15 which'may be of the same material as the sheet 13 or any suitable relatively stiff sheet material. This strip 15 is of a length so as to extend lengthwise across the sight opening 14.- of the sheet 13 with its ends resting against the sheet 13, and having its outer end extended beyond the sheet 13 as seen at 16 with a clip 17 riveted or otherwise secured at its extremity as indicated at 18 and extending some little distance in therefrom. The purpose of this clip 17 is to permit the strip 15 to be frictionally engaged and held assembled with the end of the sheet frame 13. It will be understood that the sheet 13 with the strip 15 applied thereto will in practice be slid in at the back of the sheets in the pad, and that in use the sheet frame 13 will be drawn out from the holder to the extent desired to determine one dimension A of the sight opening through which the sketching is to be done. Thereupon taking hold of the projection 16, the strip 15 may be slid transversely along the sheet 13 until the other dimension B of the sight opening has been made of the desired extent. Then the sheet frame 13 being held frictionally at the back of the pad, and the strip 15 being held frictionally secure with reference to the sheet 13 by the friction clip 17 the artist may proceed to sketch the desired objects on the sheet* exposed by the front opening 12 of the pad. In this connection it will be noted that this rectangular working area of the sheet to receive the sketch, may be laid ofi as desired in any suitable proportion with reference to the sight opening A-B, this being facilitated by the fact that the lines of the sight opening and the lines constituting the border of the exposed working surface are always in parallelism, though shiftable with respect to each other. For further aiding in locating lines of objects more or less geometrical in character on the Vworking area of the exposed leaf in the pad I may provide a second sheet frame 19 of Celluloid or stiff paper or card-board, this also being of approximately the saine size as the sketching sheets and slidable into and out of the holder 10. This sheet frame 19 has its major central portion cut out as seen at 20 to afford a working opening to the sheet underneath, it being understood that this sheet 19 is in practice slipped in at the front of the pad, c'. c., over the front sheet. The sides of this sheet frame, z'. e., the rectangular border lines of the working opening 20 are graduated on a suitable scale which may be chosen at will so as to bear any desired ratio to the dimensions of the object to be sketched. Thus having in mind the dimension of the sketching pad, for sketching the outlines say of a certain building, the scale in question might indicate two inches to the foot, while if another building or object of larger size were to be sketched, another sheet frame 19 bearing a scale of one inch to the foot might be employed., or of course the other side of the same sheet frame 19 might be thus utilized, it being of course understood that the sheet frame 19 would in such case be reversible. I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A sketching pad, composed of a holder adapted to receive sheets for sketching and presenting a definite circumscribed working area of the sheet, and means slidably fitted in said holder for delimiting and segregating a selective portion of a field range in proximity to the working area of the sheet presented by said holder.

2. A sketching pad as described, comprising a holder adapted to receive loose leaves for sketching and having its front cut away topresent a circumscribed rectangular working area of the sheet, and means having portions thereof slidably adjustable in two directions at right angles to each other and fitted to said holder, for delimiting and segregating a selective portion of a Yfield.

3. A sketching pad, comprising a holder for receivingl loose sheets forsketching and having the major portion of its front cut away to present a rectangular working area of the sheet, a sheet frame slidable in said holder and having an interior portion thereof cut away to constitute a rectangular opening, and a strip frictionally engaged with said sheet frame and slidable transversely thereof whereby a sight opening of selectively variable size and rectangular in outline may be produced yadjacent the working area of the sheet presented. 1

4. A sketching pad, comprising a holder adapted to receive a series of superposed sheets for sketching and having a major front portion thereof out aWay to present a rectanguar Working area of the foremost sheet, and a sheet frame slidable into said holder over the foremost sheet and having its major front portion out away to form a rectangular opening, said sheet frame having its edges adjacent said opening graduated on a predetermined scaleA for the purpose stated.
