SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,824, dated March 6, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BELLE EPPERLY, a citizen-of the United States of America, residing at Logan, in the county of Harrison and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in corsets, and it consists of a corset constructed substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1, represents the several parts composing one side of my improved corset; and Fig. 2 the several parts when connected. Fig. 3 is a detail showing a covering for the front fastenings to prevent the pin heads from becoming engaged with, and soiling or tearing the outer clothing.

In the drawings a, a. and b,- b' indicate the four parts forming the front and half of one side of the corset; and c, c and d, form the remainder of the side and one half of the back. The other half is of course a duplicafe of the part represented, only adapted for The parts I) and c are united from the arm to the hip by a series of elastic connections such as h and like connections are'made from the bust to the abdomen. The parts a and b are cut so as to form an elliptical openingover the bust which is filled in by the parts e, f, e, which give the required form and resiliency, and the parts a. h, are tapered at their lower ends so as to conform to the abdomen, making the garment more comfortable when the wearer is in an erect posture, and accommodating, it to the various attitudes the wearer may assume, in stooping, sitting, riding, &c.

m indicates a shoulder strap of elastic or non-elastic material and m a buckle for fastening or adjustingthe strap when the garment is in use, but the buckle and strap may be dispensed with and the corset made without them if desirable. I prefer to fasten the corset in the back with a series of buckles such as n, and a series of corresponding straps which will be located upon the opposite back section such as d. This corset is made with either stays or cords, and provided with the usual steels, and may be made with either the long or short hip sections, but I prefer the form shown in the drawings.

Over the front fastening I project a covering section P as shown in Fig. 3; this prevents the pin heads from engaging or soiling light outer garments.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As an improved article of manufacture, a corset having each of its sections comprising parts a, a, b, b, c, c and d, the parts a and I) having their adjacent edges cut away forming an elliptical opening over the bust and tapering at their lower ends to conform to the abdomen, the gore portions e, f, and 6', located in said elliptical opening, and the elastic connections between said parts a and b below the bust portion and between parts b and c, substantially as set forth.
