ATTACHMENT FOR SCHOOLr-DESKS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,735, dated March 6, 1894.

Be it known that I, CHARLOTTE M. AMER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Onarga, in the county of Iroquois and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Attachments for School- Desks, of which the following is specification.

My invention relates to improvements in attachments for school desks, in which there is a receptacle for holding pens, pencils, and other small articles for which the pupil may have frequent use; and the objects of my improvements are, first, in a school desk to so construct an attachment consisting of a receptacle with a hinged cover for holding pens, pencils, 850., that the pupil may retain pens, pencils, 850., permanently without the-use of portable boxes or other means tending to produce noise or confusion in the school-room; second, to so construct the receptacle that objects placed therein will be readily accessible and at the same time be in no danger of dropping to the floor in case the desk is jarred or the surface of the desk brushed or struck with some light object; third, to prevent or greatly lessen the noise and confusion incident to the handling of pens, pencils, etc, where desks of the usual style are used; and fourth, to so construct the receptacle that it can readily be kept clean. I attain these objectsin the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper part of a school desk having therein my attachment. A is the desk top, which is mortised or cut away so that my attachment can be let in flush with the surface.

a is the cavity or space inclosed within the box or receptacle.

b is the body of the box or receptacle, having the lid or cover, I), fastened to the body of the box, I), at e, e, by ordinary fiat hinges.

The lid is provided with a catch, f, by means of which the lid is fastened when closed. The catch shown in the drawings is an ordinary metal spring fastening which catches on a lug or point, 0, when thelid is closed. To keep the receptacle closed, except when articles are being put therein or being taken out, aspring, d, is attached to the back of the body of the receptacle, b, at h, and to the lid at g, and by its tension holding the lid shut except when force is used to raise it. The spring shown in the drawings is of the ordinary spiral sort; but any other convenient form may be used. The lid, 1), shuts down inside the body of the box, 79', the edges, or, n, n, of the front and ends of the lid, 7), being beveled slightly to prevent all danger of the lid, 1), being pushed farther down than the upper edge of the body of the box, 1), and to avoid dangerof the lid,b,sticking fast in case the lid, 19, should swell slightly. This purpose may be made more certain and sure by having the upper inside edge of the ends and front of the body of the box, I), beveled, so that the beveled edges of the lid, Z2, and of the body of the box, 5, will make a close bevel joint together when the lid, 6, is closed. The body of the box, 19, is lined with felt, cloth, or sheet rubber, '5, which is glued to the inside of the body of the box, I), and serves to prevent any rattling or other noise resulting from dropping articles into the box, or taking them out.

At the bottom inside measure of each end of the body of the box, I), there is a narrow slot, is, cut through the ends and extending from the front to the back of the body of the box, I). These slots, 7c, it, may be of any width not greater than the diameter of an ordinary slate-pencil; I prefer to have them about one tenth of an inch wide. The purpose of these slots is to aiford a ready means by which to blow or brush out of the box any dirt or dust that may collect therein; thus preventing the collection of dust or dirt in the corners or other parts of the box otherwise difficult of access.
