VEHICLE-TONGUE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,407, dated February 27, 1894.
Application filed July 80, 1892. Serial No. 441,684. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ANDRE B. MCKAY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of London,in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have iuvented'certain newandusefulImprovementsin'longues, of which the following is a description.
This invention relates to improvements in tongues for agricultural implements or machines, and for vehicles; and these improvements consist of a tongue, composed of two or more separate and independent sections, of curved sheet metal, secured to, and supported upon internal braces, and of the combination therewith, of longitudinal ribs or flanges; all of which will be particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1. is a side view of a tongue, embodying my invention. T, T, designate separate and independent tongue sections, formed of curved sheet metal,
secured to, and supported upon the internal braces, B, B. Preferably two steel sections, T, T, are used, but two or more sections may be used, and they may be made of steel, iron or other suitable material, and of any suitable size or shape. These sections, T, T, are curved as shown in Fig. 3. and their convex sides are placed adjacent to the horses, to prevent them from being chafed or injured in any way by the movement of the tongue when in opera tion.
R, B, designate longitudinal ribs or flanges, secured to, or formed integral with the curved sections, T, T, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 6, these ribs or fianges,B, stiffen and strengthen these curved sections, T, and enable the latter to be formed of very light and thin material, at the same time, retain the required rigidity and stiftness of the tongue.
B, B, designate internal securing and suporting braces, which are preferably formed of malleable iron, but they may be formed of any suitable material, these are riveted or otherwise secured to the curved sections, T,
and form a convenient means for firmly securing and holding said tongue sections in their proper relation to one another. These braces, B, are preferably formed in one piece, but they maybe formed of two or more parts as required, and when the longitudinal ribs or flanges, R, are used, sockets, S, are formed, in said braces, B, to which said ribs or flanges, R, are fitted, but if these braces were formed in two parts for instance, the ribs or flanges, R, could be inserted between these parts. And the rivets, which secure the tongue sections, T, to the braces, B, may be formed separately, or they may be formed integral with said braces. When they are formed integral with the brace, B, they are in the form of studs, A, as shown in Fig. 5, so that after placing thetongue sections, T,in position on said braces, B, these studs would extend through the holes, O,in said tongue sections; by swaging down the projecting ends of which, the tongue sections and braces would be rigidly secured together. This forms a very simple and convenient means, for secu ring the braces and tongue sections together.
Any suitable attachment may be used between the rear end or foot of the tongue and the machine, or vehicle, as found most suitable or convenient under the circumstances.

Having thus described my invention, I clain1 1. As a new article of manufacture, a tongue, composed of two or more separate and independent sections, T, provided with internal projections, and internal braces engaging said projections for supporting and connecting said sections, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
2. Asa new article of manufacture, atongue, composed of two or more separate and independent sections, T, of curved sheet metal, provided with ribs or flanges, R, in combination with the internal supporting and connecting braces, B, having sockets to receive said flanges on the sections substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
