G. A. LANDON. NECK YOKE Patented June 14,1898.
ATNT rrrcn.
GEORGE ARTHUR LANDON, OF TORONTO, CANADA,,ASSIGNOR OF ONE I-IALF TO WILLIAM DOUGLAS, OF SAME PLACE.
N ECK-YOKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 605,490, dated J nne 14, 1898. Application filed September '7, 1897. Serial No. 650,841. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, GEORGE ARTHUR LAN- DON, manufacturer, a subject of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, residing in the city of To ronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yokes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in neck-yokes.
The object of the present invention is to,
often resulting from neck-yokes becoming detached from poles or tongues.
' The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of Like letters of reference designate corre-' sponding parts in the several figures of the drawings. A designates a pole or tongue, and B a neck-yoke, which is provided at its ends with metal loops 5, receiving straps C, which are attached to the front harness of the horses.
The neck-yoke has attached to its lower facea ball-socket"D,'constructed of malleable metal or other suitable material and provided at the top with laterally extending flanges D, having perforations d, through which pass bolts E, which extend through the neck-yoke, and a top plate F, located on the upper face of the neck-yoke and situated diametrically opposite the socket.
The socket D, which is provided at its rear side with a slot d, receives a solid ball G, which is provided With a stem passing through the slot cl. The slot d, which forms a way for the stem of the bar, extends from the top of the socket to the bottom of the central portion of the same.
The stem, which inclines upward and rearward, is formed integral with a ring G which is obliquely arranged on the pole or tongue in alinement with the stem and the ball and swing backward, so that the socket will be tilted rearwardly upon the ball and the slot moved downwardly upon the stern. In case of accident, such as the breakage of a trace or traces, it will be seen that immediately the horse freed will exert its strain upon the ball and socket, bringing the stem against the lower portion of the slot and having a tendency to cant the ring forwardly at the top and cause the same to bind effectually upon thepole, thereby securing the neck-yoke to the pole and thus preventing any danger of ,running away. The driver is also enabled to draw up his horses and repair the damage.
What I claim is- The combination with a neck-yoke, and a pole, of a ring arranged on the pole andprovided with an upwardlyextending rearwardly-inclined stem formed integral with the ring, a solid ball arranged at the upper end of and formed integral with the stem and being of much greater diameter than the same,
and a sooketreoeivingthe ball and provided Signedat Toronto this 7th day of July, at its back with a narrow slot receiving the 1897.
stem and extendin downward from the top i of the socket to the center of the bottom por- GEORGE ARTHUR LAND 5 tion thereof, said socket being provided at its In presence oftop with a flange D secured to the lower face BOSVILLE PLACE, of the neck-yoke, substantially as described. v LENA MCARTHUR.
