HOLDER FOR PAPERS, PAMPHLETS, OR THE LIKE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,987, dated February 20, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANCIS BUNBURY Frrz- GERALD CAMPBELL, librarian, a subject of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 29 Avonmore Road, Vest Kensington,London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain Improvements in and Relating to Holders or Cases for Papers, Pamphlets, Reports, Periodicals, Music, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to holders or cases for papers, pamphlets, reports, periodicals, music, and the like, and its object is to provide a holder or case of simple and economical construction, the containing capacityof which may readily be varied to suit the thickness of the articles it is intended to hold.

A holder or case constructed in accordance with my invention somewhat resembles the cover of a book and consists of two leaves or covers of millboard, wood, or other suitable fairly rigid material connected together by a band or strip of some suitable flexible material, such as leather or cloth, forming a back.

The main feature of my invention, as will be hereinafter more clearly set forth consists in so connecting the flexible back with the leaves or covers as that the lines of junction of said back with the leaves or covers may be readily varied at will, and this I eifect by passing the sides of the band or strip forn1= ing, the back through slits ornarrow apertures formed near the edges of the leaves or covers, said slits or narrow apertures may be either cut in the leaves or covers, or produced by securing bands, strips, rods, or clips of suitable material, such as canvas, webbing, or metal, thereto. By drawing one or both sides of the back inward or outward through the said slits or narrow apertures, the width of the material forming the back, between its lines of junction with the leaves, may obviously be lessened or increased as desired.

Any suitable means such as holding straps, tapes, clips, and the like, connecting the back with the leaves or covers, may be employed for securing the back in the position to which it has been adjusted, but the friction or grip between the same and the slits or narrow apertures through which it passes would probably in most cases be found to be sufficient.

In the accompanying drawings in which similar letters refer to corresponding parts in all the figuresz-Figure 1 is a plan of the inner face of one of the leaves or covers showing the connection between the same and the adjustable flexible back. In Figs. 1 and 2 the back I) is represented as connected with the leaves or covers a by passing through slits or narrow apertures C out in the latter. cl. d. are straps preferably of webbing or other rough faced material tightly stretched across the inner faces of the covers a under which straps the sides of the back I) are passed. The rough faces of the straps d pressing tightly against the surface of the back I) will retain the same in the position to which it has been adjusted.

In Figs. 3 and t in lieu of slits or narrow apertures 0 cut in the leaves or covers a, I represent narrow apertures or slits for the passage of the back I) as formed by securing thin metal rods 0' parallel to the edges of the leaves or covers a.

In Figs. 5 and 6 narrow apertures or slits for the passage of the back 1) are shown as produced by straps or bands 0 preferably of thin sheet metal or webbing secured over the inner faces of the covers a near their edges.

In all cases the adjustment of the back I) is etfected by drawing one or both sides of the same inward or outward in regard to the leaves or covers at, either through the slits c, or through the narrow apertures or slits produced be tween the covers and the rods, straps, or clips 0 c and 0 If desired the straps 015 may in many cases be dispensed with, as the friction or grip between the back I) and the slits 'or narrow apertures through which it passes may in many cases prove sufficient to retain the back I) in the desired position.

In order to prevent accidental disconnection of the leaves or covers and back, I prefer to thicken the edges of the backbin some convenient manner, as by cords stitched therein (shown at 1)) thereby preventing the accidental withdrawal of the back I) through the slits or narrow apertures through which it passes. The said thickened edges b may also in some cases serve to assist in retaining the back in the position to which it has been adjusted.

By the employment of myimproved holder or case, it will be seenthat whatever the thickness of the contents thereof, the leaves or covers a may be caused, by adjustment of the back I) as before explained, to lie flat upon and in close contact with the whole surface of such contents; there will also be no bulg What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States, is

1. In combination in an adjustable binder the two covers or sides and the adjustable flexible back connectingthe same, said back passing through apertures at the edges of the covers and the strap cl secured to the inner side of the cover to receive the free end of the back between itself and the cover, substantially as described.

2. In combination in an adjustable binder,

the two covers or sides, and the adjustable flexible back connecting the same, said back passing through apertures at the edges of the covers and the strap cl extending along the inner side of the covers to receive the free end of the back between itself and the cover, the edge of said free end beingthickened, substantially as described.
