Be it known that'I Fmcns HIGBIE, of
Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of NewYorlqhave invented a new and useful Improvement in Music-Stands and other Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. Y
My invention relates to an clamp joints, and it has for its object to provide a means whereby any horizontal object,
such as a music rest, bracket or table for ex ample, may be adjustably held upon an upright support without the assistance of set screws or equivalent devices.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the connecting'medium between the horizontal and vertical objects, that the former may be expeditiouslyand conven.
' iently adjusted to any point in the length of the latter, and the moment the-point to which the adjustment is to be made is reached, by
releasing the horizontal music rest, bracket or other object, it will remain stationary upon I the support, and the more weight that is placed upon the horizontally located object the more .closely will the said object be bound 7 to its support.
The invention consists in the novel con- 1 'struction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forthand pointed out in the claim.
Reference is time had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference'iudicate corresponding partsiu allthe views.
trated a support A, which is in the form of a bar, and which may be of any cross sect ional,
shape. The support A,,maybe properly termed a standard, and the object shown as supported by the standard is a music rest B; I but. it will be understood that any'bracket or equivalent of the music rest may lie-connected 5p with the standard. I The music rest B in the drawingsjs show-n improvement in as rectangular, but the essential feature of 5 the invention lies in the connecting medium which vis to unite the rest, bracket or other article with the standard A. "In the present instancethe connecting medium consists in a neck or lu'g 10, which-neck or lug is given" "an upward inclination from the rest, and the neck orlng isprovided with. an. opening 11,
opening is wider'at the top than at the bot tom, and the opposite side walls of the opening are inclined in opposite directions, as, for example, what may betermed the-inner side wall a, is inclined from the bottom upward and outward in direction of the body, while the opposite side walla, is inclined from the bottom upward and outward away from the body, as is best shown in Fig. 2'. Thus the two lower opposite points in the bottom portion of the opening 11, would represent the upper and leverage pointdesignated as 12,
and thelo'wer and fulcrum point designated as 13, and these two points of contact are in different horizontal planes,'andare adapted to impinge upon opposite sidesof the standard or support.
One of the important features of the inventio'n consists in so constructing the clamp that it will not, when adjusted, wabble or tip sidewise, but will remain perfectly steady. This is accomplished by causing the point of leverage to diametrically meet the pointof fulcrum, thu s providingfor a bearingof the arti-- 010 to be supported, all aroundthe support.
It will be readily observed that by tilting the rest B upwardly, the fulcrum point 13 will be carried out of engagement with the standard 'or support A, as likewise the leverage point 12, and the rest may be carried up and down the standard or support'to whatever point fancy may dictate or occasion may require. 'The moment, however, that the-rest is released and drops to its normal or horizontal position, the leverage point 12, will engage with one side of the support or standard, and the fulcrum p'oint13 with an opposite side of the support or standard, and as the two points .are.in dilferent. horizontal planes one will wserve-to counteract the other, as they impinge one below the other at practically difierent angles np9n the support or standard, and
thereforeith'e greater the weight placed upon the rest the firmer the rest will be clamped to its standard or support.
As has heretofore been stated the word music rest is simply used to designate one article that may be held adjusted upon a vertical support, but any article adapted to 'be held in a horizontal or approximatelyhori zcntal position may be as well supported as a music rest,
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A support and an article to be supported, the latter being provided with an opening wider at one end than at the other, said opening having its wall inclined, one portion of the wall serving as a point of leverage and the what opposite point as a fulcrum point,'the two points being in two different horizontal planes located at the same end of the opening and adapted to impinge'on opposite sides of the support, both the'fulcruui and leverage portions of the wall of the opening engaging with about one ha1f of the circumference of the support, forming a substantially circular bearing in a horizontal direction, and whereby the article to be supported may be adjusted upon the support and held at any desired point in the length of the support without danger of rocking, substantially as shown and described.
