UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
ISAAC H. K. DOWNES, OF OHALRLESTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS. I
IMPROVEMENT lN CLAMPS FOR MUSIC-STANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,214., dated November 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC H. K. DOWNES, of Oharlestown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an 1mproved Clamp for Music-Stands and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawing which accompanies and forms part of this specification, is. a description of my invention suficient to enable those skilled in the art to practice it.
My invention has particular reference to a method of supporting desks (for holding music) upon a piano-forte. For effecting such support I make a clamp having two arms extendingright-angularly from a bar, one of said arms having a clamp-screw passing through it. a horizontal arm also extending from the bar, which arm has a vertical hole extending through it for reception of the rod, at the top of which is fixed the desk for holding the music, this aim also having a clamp-screw extending through to the rod for holding the rod in position and enabling the desk to be raised and lowered. Such construction enables the arms or clamp to embrace the upper edge of the vertical frame of an open piano-forte, or the back of a chair, or a settee-back; and by such means music can be readily supported upon desks in position to be used for singing or playing without the employment of stands resting upon the floor. The invention consists in a music-holding desk and clamp having such construction.
. my invention.
0. denotes a metal bar, cast with two arms, b c, at its opposite ends, the arm 0 having a boss, through which and the arm 0 passes a clamp-screw, e, for confinement of the device to the vertical side piece f of a piano-forte frame, or to any other vertical piece, like the top rail of the back of a chair or the top rail of a setteeback. From one end of the casting a b 0 (preferably the end opposite the screw e) a horizontal arm, g, extends, this arm forming an integral part of the casting, and having made through it a vertical hole, It, through which passes a vertical rod, '5, having at its top the desk k. The hole h is near the end of the arm, and through the arm end to the hole extends a clamp-screw, Z, by which the rod can be fastened at any suitableposition, in accordance with the height at which it is desired that the desk should stand, the rod being raised or lowered by first loosening the screw.
By means of this invention music-desks may be arranged around a piano-forte so as to readily enable a chorus of singers to gather around the player.
I claim-- The clamp for supporting the desk-rod i, said clamp having the two vertical arms I) c and clamp-screw e, and the right-angular arm g with its vertical rod-receiving bearing h and horizontal clamp-screw Z, all substantially as shown and described.
