UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN PAUL MUELLER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PEDAL ATTACHMENT FOR PIANOFORTES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,724, dated February 13, 1894.
Application filed October 17, 1893' Serial No.4=88,35'7. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN PAUL MUELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pedal Attachments for Pianofortes, due, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a stool provided with means whereby a child or person with short limbs, may readily reach the pedals of a piano-forte, or similar musical instrument, said means embodying a plate adapted to be firmly connected with the stool and springpressed spindles mounted on bosses of said plate, said spindles being adapted to be moved into contact with the pedals. A guard is also provided, whereby the stool is prevented from shifting and injuring the piano-forte, the construction and operation of the parts being hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a pedal attachment embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the same, opposite to that shown in Fig. 1, and removed from the stool.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates a foot-stool of ordinary construction.
B designates a casting or forging consistin g of the angle bar 0, the eyes D on the horizontal limb thereof, and the bosses E on the vertical limb thereof. In the bosses E are the vertical spindles F, which are pressed upwardly by the springs G, which bear against said bosses and the heads of said spindles. Projecting forwardly from the bosses or plate, are arms H, which are provided with rubber tips or cushions J on the ends thereof.
The bar 0 is connected with the edge of the stool A by means of screws or nails passed through the eyes D into the stool, and owing to its angular form, is firmly held in position and prevented from slipping. The stool is then placed under a piano-forte so that the feet K of the spindles are over the pedals, so that when the player depresses the spindles, the pedals will be operated, the stool also providing means for resting the feet of the player when not required upon the spindles. When the spindles are clear of the feet, the springs G restore the same to their normal or elevated positions.
Owing to the arms H, the stool is prevented from shifting forwardly, as said arms rest against the pedal-support as a stop, and the cushions prevent scratching of or injury to the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A foot-stool having an angular bar connected with the edge thereof, bosses on said bar, and spindles mounted in said bosses, said parts being combined forming a pedal attachment as stated.
2. A plate attachable to a stool having vertical spring-pressed spindles mounted thereon, in combination with stop-arms projecting horizontally forward from said plate, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a stool of an angular bar with fastening eyes on the horizontal limbs thereof, and bosses on the vertical limbs thereof, vertically-movable spindles mounted in said bosses, springs bearing upwardly against said spindles, and stop-arms projecting forwardly from said bar, substantially as described.
4. A pedal attachment for a footstool consisting of a plate having a vertical limb with bosses thereon, forwardly-proj ecting arms on said plate, spindles in said bosses, and springs controlling said spindles, said parts being combined substantially as described.
JOHN PAUL MUELLER.
