ELIAS HYMAN, or BROOKLYN, 'itnw YORK- STAIR-RISER rnorno'ron.
Application filed May 4,
This invention relates to stair coverings, and has more particular reference to a novel stair riser protector.
The invention has for an object, the provision of a stair riser protector of simple, durable, and desirable construction.
The invention has for a further object, the provision of a novel stair riser protector, which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth. 7
Referring to the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a part of a stairway, having the invention applied thereto. a
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of one of the steps, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but illustrating a modification of the invention.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary face view of a riser protector frame, disclosing a modification of the invention.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view, taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
The reference numerals 10 indicate generally, the steps of a stairway having risers 11. The steps 10 are provided with cushions 12, either padded, or plain, and of any con struction. The risers 11 are provided with protectors constructed according to this in vention, and constisting of a frame having substantially horizontal sides 13, and vertical sides 14, holding protector material 15, as shown in Fig. 2, or cushioned protector material 16, as shown in Fig. 3. The frame is attached to the riser by screws 17 passed through the sides 13 and 14.
Attention is directed that the instant stair riser protector is a unit in itself, and has no depending connection with the step cushion 12. The protectors ma first be fastened to the risers, and therea ter the cushions 12 fastened to the steps 10. A feature of the invention is that the frame sides 13 and 14 engage the protector material 15 only, that is, no dependence is had with foreign elements, and therefore the riser protector may be manufactured in a shop, completely ready for setting in place on the stair riser.
1927. Serial No. 188,850.
The screws 17 used to fasten the protector in place on the riser, besides passing through the sides 13 and 14, may also pass through the protector material 15, as shown in Fig. 2, thus aiding in holding the material 15 in place in the frame.
Referring in particular to Figs. 4 and 5, a modification has been illustrated, disclosing that the heights of the riser protector frames may be manufactured to be adjustable to accommodate risers of different heights, so that protector material 15 of different heights may be used in the sameframes. The vertical sides 14 are split and slidably connected as indicated at 20. A lever arm 21 is hingedly mounted as at 22 to the inner side of each of the vertical sides 14, on one side of the split, and has one face serrated and engageable with complementary serrations on the side 14, on the other side of the split, as indicated by numeral 23. A very stiff spring 24 attached to one of the horizontal sides 13, forces the lever 21 so that the serrations engage. The spring 24 may be manually forced free from the lever 21, andthe lever swung free from the vertical side 14', which may then be set as desired.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form, construction, and arrangement of the several elements employed, it will be understood that the device is, nevertheless, susceptible of considerable modification therein which may be especially useful when it is desired to change the stair pad simultaneously with the riser protector, and I therefore reserve the right and privilege of resorting to all such changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A stair riser protector, comprising a frame having substantially vertical and horizontal sides, the frame being adapted to support protector material and the said vertical sides being adjustable in height.
2. A stair riser protector, comprising a frame having substantially vertical and horizontal sides, the frame being adapted to support protector material and the said vertical sides being adjustable in height by means of being split, and slidably engaged, a lever pivoted on one side of the split, provided with serrations engageable with ser- 'ill rations on the other side of the split, and a spring on the frame urging the serrations into engagement.
3. A stair riser protector comprising a frame having substantially vertical and horizontal sides, the frame being adapted to support protector material and the said ver- ELIAS HYMAN.
