Description

Feb. 15, 1949.
N. ALIKAS FOOTREST Filed July 18, 1946 ,f1/Moles ms Patented Feb. 15, 1949 UNITED STATESV PATENT OFFICE 2,461,622 f FOO'VIREST Nicholas Alikas, Plainville, Conn.V Application July 18, 1946, Serial No. 684,422 Y 1 Claim. (Cl. 155-169) Persons who are obliged to spend long hours standing at a work bench, or moving about rover hard oors and pavements, or sitting at a desk,
or riding in automobiles, are well aware of the tired feeling which comes to their feet, and how that tired feeling is relieved when they are ablev to rest their feet on something higher than the enough. To enjoy the feet need to be'v floor. Sitting down is not complete rest and relaxation, properly elevated.
This invention relates to foot rests and has, primarily, the following objects in view:
l. To produce a foot rest adaptable for use under a desk in an oice, in front of a chair in the parlor or bedroom of any home, in an automobile, or any place where people sit down to rest and relax.
r2. To produce a foot rest which can be reversibly or invertibly used with equal eicacy.
3. To produce a foot rest which may also be used as a seat, especially by children, or to accommodate extra persons in a car or other places where and when space is at a premium.
4. To produce a foot rest which will be strong and durable, neat and in good taste, easy to manufacture, and retailed at a reasonable price.
Other useful advantages and attractive features of this invention will become apparent specication is read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing which forms an integral part of this application and in which:
Fig. 1 shows a plan view of the invention;
Fig. 2 shows a front or rear elevation;
Fig. 3 shows a side elevation of the device;
Fig. 4 shows a plan view of a modifled form of the foot rest; and
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the modified form.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings wherein like numerals indicate corresponding parts of the invention;
To manufacture the article constituting the subject of this invention, a long resilient strip of metal is taken and bent or doubled on itself substantially as shown at Fig. 1 of the drawings. The metal strip chosen to form the frame of the device shown is tubular from one-quarter (1A) to one-half (1i) inch in diameter, but it is obvious that any other shape or form of metal strip may be used, such as a solid rod or at or even plastic material can be chosen to make the frame without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Whatever material is used, when the same is bent around to form the complete frame the free ends are united, as shown at I4, so that the Whole when this steel ribbon,Y
' 2 is presented as a single piece without any free or loose ends showing anywhere about it.
The frame of the foot rest, as shown at Fig. 1 of the drawings, has on the topside thereof parallel side bars i9, spaced about two (2) inches apart and running from back to front for about 7 to 8 inches; thence thestrip is turned to provide paralleled frontal bars I I running lengthwise or latitudinally of the frame for about l2 inches; thence to the rear portion of the frame providing each side of the same with upright or vertical parallel bars I2 constituting the leg portions of the foot rest. These two pairs of legs stand about 5 inches high from the floor, and the members of each pair stand about y2 inches apart (same as the side and frontal bars). The legs I2 are then bent forward to form snow-shoe or racketshaped feet I3 running directly under the parallel sides I0 and extending slightly beyond the frontal bars II. These feet are 2 inches wide at the heel and about 3 inches across the widest part of the paw The space within the boundary of the inner side bars lil and the inner frontal bar i I is covered and bridged either by a cloth, such as carpeting, or by some metallic, or plastic material I5.
At Fig. l is illustrated one of the many modified forms in which this invention may be expressed and utilized without departing from its fundamental objects and basic principles. In this instance the strip out of which the frame of the foot rest is made is bent to provide 2 parallel bars I6, about 12 inches in length, bent downwardly to form the legs Il, and then inwardly from the ends toward the middle, underneath the bars I 6, to form the feet |18.
The space between the parallel bars I6 is covered or bridged by a material I9, which may be either cloth, metal or plastic.
In use, the device shown and described is placed in front of a person seated in a chair or on the seat of a car and the person can rest his feet by placing them on the device, either on vthe top side, on the bars I6 or I5, or on the covering I 5; or, the same may be inverted and the person may rest his feet by placing them on the feet I3 or I8 of the devices shown.
The Vfoot rest produced in accordance with the letter and spirit of this specication is adaptable to be used under a desk, in the home, or while travelling.
It is also adaptable utilizing coverings I5 or I9 for that purpose.
The strip out of which the frame of the article is formed is of highly polished and decorative to be used as a seat, by
material; likewise the material of the covering. Thus the finished product makes a very attractive, ornamental, as well asuseful piece of furniture.
Fromthe foregoing specification, read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it will be clearly seen that I have invented an article of furniture which can be used at any time and place for either as a foot rest or as a seat, as conditions vandiocea'sions may require; l
Having# thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
A foot rest comprising a rod of pliable resinent material doubled into an endless loop of parallel counterparts which in turnfare bent-at certain points from the middle off said loop to form two horizontally disposed Ulsha'ped por'- tions, one of them being within and parallel to the other, the arms of said Ushaped portions being in turn bent at certain points forming two pair of perpendicularlyV disposed parallel legs,
