EJ NUNES FOLDING BACK REST FOR BLEACHER SEATS Filed Jan. 21, 1946 JNVENTOR. Edward Nunes BY 7 EL. Aff'l/ Patented July 20, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FOLDING BACK REST FOR BLEACHER SEATS Edward Nunes, San Francisco, Calif.
Application January 21, 1946, Serial No. 642,517
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to improvements in backrests, and has particular reference to a back-rest which can be used at sporting events such as football games, baseball games, boat-races or horseraces, or any other similar place where it is desired to have a back-rest for a seat.
A further object is to produce a device of this character which may be readily adjusted to the desired position by the user.
A further object is to provide construction which is sturdy and wherein none of the parts may be easily deranged.
A still further object is to produce a device of this character which is economical to manufacture and one which will be neat and attractive in appearance.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a seat and backrest constructed in accordance with my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hinged portion thereof.
It very frequently happens that sporting events such as football and baseball games, boat and horse races, and the like, the seating accommodations are without back support. As a consequence many persons are unduly fatigued and remain away from such events due to the fact that they are uncomfortable.
Applicant has therefore devised a back-rest which may be readily attached to any seat, having an adjustable back section, thus enabling the individual user to adjust the same to suit his particular desire.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the usual seat found at the places where sporting events are held. To this seat is attached, by means of hooks, a seat section 1.
A back section is shown at 8, which back section is connected to the seat section by a pair of hinges, each of which consists of a pair of plates, as shown at 9 and II, which are secured together by a bolt I2 and have their squared ends [3 connected to the seat section, as by welding, soldering or in any other desired manner.
Pivoted between the plates 9 and II is a pivoted member M, which has a relatively large opening It formed therein, within which is mounted an eccentric disc ll formed upon the shaft [8, which shaft has bearings in the plates 9 and H.
In order to rotate this eccentric disc I! I provide a, handle [9 which moves over a serrated quadrant 2|. The pivoted member [4 has its lower end abutting the slot A formed between the plates, as shown at B.
It is obvious that by moving the handle I9, which will rotate the eccentric disc, that the point of contact B, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, will move rearwardly, as shown in dotted lines in this figure, and consequently, the back section which is attached to the pivoted member 1'4 will be tilted in accordance with the amount of movement of the eccentric disc.
It will thus be seen that I have produced a device which will accomplish all of the objects above set forth.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a device of the character described, the combination with a seat section and a back section of a pair of hinges connecting said sections, each of said hinges comprising a, pair of abutting plates, having a slot formed therebetween, a pivoted member positioned in said slot, the lower end of said pivoted member engaging the bottom of said slot when said back section is in upright position, said pivoted member having an eccentric disc positioned therein, a shaft in said disc extending through said plates, and means for rotating said shaft.
EDWARD NUNES.
