Description

J. R. TYSON.
AUXILIARY-PEDAL. APPLIGATION FILED MAY 27, 1910,

M6 1 (SAW/14% JAMES R. TYSON, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
AUXILIARY PEDAL.
T 0 all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES R. TYsoN, citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Pedals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined foot rest and pedal extension for use in connection with a piano or like instrument.
The invention consists of a foot support provided with a series of movable rods adapted to contact with the pedals of a piano, when moved by the foot of the performer. The support will serve as a rest for the performers feet and is particularly useful for children or persons too small to reach the pedals while seated on the usual seat or stool before the piano. In addition to the rest for the feet, the person may also have the full control of the pedals, through the operating rods, with the same result as were the pedals operated directly by the feet.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view; Fig. 2 a front elevation Fig. 3 a side elevation and Fig. 4 a section through one of the rod guides, of my improved device.
The numeral 1 designates the top, 2 the base and 3 the side pieces or uprights of the foot rest.
The device may be made of any material and of any design desired.
In the top of the support I secure three vertically movable rods 4t. These rods move in guides 5 which are secured in the top, pass through it and depend some distance below it, and act as guides for the rods to insure the rods keeping the proper alinement. These rods are formed with heads 6, which are shown removable for convenience in inserting them in the guides. These heads are intended for engagement by the feet of the performer, and the lower extremities of the rods are provided with caps 7 prefer- Specification of Letters Patent.

ably of rubber or like material, and slightly concaved on their lower faces. These caps are adapted to contact with the protruding ends 8 of the pedals, when depressed and the concaved surfaces of the caps 7 will prevent them slipping from engagement with the surfaces of the pedals.
The rods at are each provided with a coiled spring 9 interposed between the head 6 and the top of the support, to keep the rods nor mally in raised position, so that the caps on the lower extremities thereof will just pass over the pedals when the rest is placed in positionbefore the instrument. The support is provided with suitable buffers 10 in the form of rubber or felt buttons to prevent injury to the instrument when placed against it.
It is evident that when it is desired to operate the pedals, the foot is placed on the head of the rod and a pressure thereon will depress the pedal beneath it. It is also evident that the construction may be modified to permit its use in connection with an organ, or a piano player or like instrument in which pedals are to be operated, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not desire to limit myself to the exact construction shown, but
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a device of the character described, the combination of a foot rest, vertical hollow guides carried by said foot rest and secured thereto by expanding the upper extremities of said guides, vertically operating rods located in said guides for engaging the pedals of a piano, adjustable heads removably secured to the upper ends of said rods, adj ustable caps removably secured to the lower ends of said rods and springs interposed between the upper surface of the foot rest and the under side of the removable heads.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES R. TYSON.
