AUXILIARY PEDAL FOR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS FURNISHED WITH PEDALS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,800, dated January 23, 1900.

Be it known that I, ERNST SEILER, teacher of the piano, of Pforzheim, in the Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Pedals or Footstools for Musical Instruments which are Furnished with Pedals; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

The invention refers to an improved arran gement for musical instruments which are furnished with pedals. It aims at giving young scholars or scholars with short legs a support for their feet and also at offering them the possibility of making use of the pedals.

The object of the invention in question is a footstool open on one side for the entrance of the pedals, which, by means of inserted or removed frames, can be fixed higher or lower, as may be desired, at the same time offering the possibility of pressing down the pedals which are farther below. This is accomplished by the use of exchangeable and perpendicularlyguided pins which, by means of levers, lean on the pedals, the top ends of the pins which project over the cover of the footstool being provided with wide heads on which the scholar puts the point of his foot, and thus indirectly presses down the pedal.

In the drawings given herewith, Figure 1 represents a section in the direction 0 D. Fig. 2 represents a sectional plan in the direction A B, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a ground plan and a section of a wooden frame in the direction 0 D.

The changeable tread for the heel of the foot or the height h of the stool H can either at once be manufactured in difierent heights or, as shown in the drawin gs, be made changeable by inserting between the cornices h and h2 frames at a a ad, 850., which can be secured to one another, as well as the cornices h and 7?, by the pins 1) b b. a a a a for the purpose of transmitting to the pedals G G the pressure exerted by the point of the foot on the top end of a pin. Thus according to the distance of the pedals from the floor one, two, several, or perhaps no simple frame will be inserted under the frame which is provided with levers. In the draw in gs, Fig. 1, given herewith, two simple frames of the shape given in Fig. 3 have been put under the frame with the levers and one has been put over the same.

The levers E E obtain their motion which directly acts on the pedals by the exchangeable pins J J, which project over and are guided in the cover of the stool. According to the height of the auxiliary pedal that may be desired the length of the pins is chosen. Their top ends are provided with wide heads. By the help of an assortment of pins of different lengths it will be easy to obtain the proper height of the auxiliary pedal for any height of the footstool.

L is a board which protects the instrument from any damage.

Having now particularly described and ascertained my said invention andin what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is-= The combination, in a footstool for musical instruments which can be provided with pedals, the back of the footstool being open and its height adjustable, of a cover, removable frames at, a, a the levers E, E, hinged to one of the frames, the pins J, J, which project through the cover and engage the levers enabling the player to press the pedals either directly or by means of levers E, E, substantially as described.
