ATENT FFICE.
CHARLES L. MAHNICKE, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
CHAIN PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 514,721, dated February 13, 1894. Application filed April 6, 1891-' Serial No. 387,849- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, CHARLES L. MAHNICKE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at O0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Chain Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification. v
Myinvention has particular relation to the improvement of the construction shown in my former patent, No. 415,047, of November 12,
1889, and my'improvement consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafterset forth.
' The objects of my invention are to provide improved means for adjusting and securing the chain to the wrench bar, to provide the bar with separated parallel rows of reversing teeth; to provide an improved connection of the inner end of the chain with the wrench bar and to otherwise produce a superior form of pipe wrench, in a simple and durable manner. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- I I Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wrench applied to a pipe which is shown in cross section. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the wrench bars taken on line as a: of Fig. 1, and Fig.3 is a plan view of my improved wrench, showing. the same applied to a section of piping.
Similar letters refer to'similar parts throughout the several views.
a represents the wrench bar, which consists as shown of a head 17 and a rear extension or handle portion of thereof. The head portion 1) is as shown in the drawings of somewhat greater depth or thickness than its handle portion and is provided on its under side and forward end portion with an inverted U- shaped groove 0 which separates as shown,
the lower side and forwardend of the barj edges 0 are out to form teeth 6, the teeth of one side of said notch center being inclined of the catch lug fthe end of the bar is in clined rearwardly to meet the upper side thereof as shown atf'. At the meeting point of the inclined end portion f and upper side of the bar, the head of'the latter is provided with two oppositely located projecting catchlugs g, one of which extends from and is formed with each of the separated portions c of the bar. The forward faces of these lugs g are also concaved or curved to conform to the curve of a chain link.
irepresen'tsthe chain, the inner or rear link of which receives the central portion of a transverse pin d,which extends through the deeper rear end of the groove 0 and has its ends fixed in the sides of the bar. In this manner, the chain is made secure at one end to the Wrench bar. In grasping and turning a pipe which it is desired to turn forwardly or from the operator, the chain 1' is placed beneath the pipe 70, thelatter drawn upward by said chain and its peripherybrought into contact with the two forward rows of teeth e,
which are inclined outwardly. The outer portion of the chain is then drawn over the end of the bar head, two of its upright links being supported between the pairs of projectionsfand g and the intervening horizontal link having its ends in engagement with the inner curved faces of the lug f. The lugs 9 also form a stop bearing for the forward end of the next horizontal link of the chain above the one heretofore mentioned. I
'As described in my said former patent, the direction in which the pipe is turned may be reversed by causing the periphery thereof, to engage with the rearwardlyinclined teeth e.
In either case the turn of the pipe is produced through a rocking or backward and forward movement of the bar.
From the construction hereinshown and described, it is obvious that a'chain attachmentstudor similar projection isunneces sary on the outer side of the bar and that the necessity of doubling the chain about the piping and the formation of notches for the engagement of the chain as described, in my said former patent, is obviated. It will also be seen that the operation herein described is exceedingly simple and that the chain may be readily locked into position Without annecessary loss of time.
Owing to the formation of the groove or recess c, it will be observed that the periphery of the pipe will be subjected to the bite of two sets of teeth and that a more firm grip upon the pipe will be had.
Having now fully described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a chain pipe wrench, the combination with a bar having a groove or recess on the under side and forward end of said bar head, two pairs of lugs f and g projecting as described from the forward end of said bar head and on opposite sides of the groove 0, the under side of the bar head having a V-shaped notch, oppositely inclined teeth on opposite sides of the groove 0 and the notched vertex of a chain having one of its ends pivoted within the rear end of said groove 0 and the links of the remaining end adapted to lie between and engage with the pairs of lugsf and g, substantially as described.
CHARLES L. MAHNICKE.
