EDWARD O. ELY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE TRIMO'NT MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,994, dated .Tune 24, 1890.
Application led March l, 1890. Serial No. 342,226. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD O. ELY, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Pipe- Wrenches, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to pipe-wrenches of that class known as chain Wrenches, usually employed on pipes of substantially large diameter.
My present invention has for its object to improve and simplify the construction of wrenches of the class referred to; and my said invention consists in novel features of construction, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims at the end of this speciication.
Figure l is a side elevationof a sufficient portion of a pipe-wrench embodying my invention to enable it to be understood, the handle being broken off; Fig. 2, a detail on an enlarged scale to be referred to, and Fig. 3 a top or plan view of the' wrench shown in Fig. 2.
The handle a, preferably of iron or steel, has preferably cast integral with it an enlarged head a', bifurcated at its rear end to form sides a2 a3, provided, as herein shown, with recesses having curved shoulders a4, there being two such recesses shown in each side a2 of. The head a at its front side is provided with recesses b on opposite sides of a hub b', through which is extended the pivot pin or rod h2 of the movable jaw, herein shown as composed of two independent pieces b3 b, joined together at their opposite ends by a pin h5. The movable jaw has secured to it by the pin h5 a gripping-band, preferably composed of links b, joined together by pivotpins 67, which extend beyond the sides of the links and are adapted to enter the recesses in the sides of the stationary head and engage the shoulders a4 when passed about the pipe c to turn the same. The movable jaw is provided with serrations or teeth on its upper face, and its lower face normally rests upon and is supported by the bottom of the recess b, and adjacent to the stationary head the said jaw is provided, preferably, with two ears or lugs c-one on each part--which engage with or abut against the stationary head when the handle is moved in a direction to obtain a new bite or hold on the pipe-as, for instance, when the handle is moved in the direction indicated by arrow 20, Fig. l. It will thus be seen that the ears c prevent the movable jaw from being turned backward on its pivot when a new hold or bite is taken, and, lwith part of the stationary head forming the bottom of the recess h, limits the forward movement of the movable jaw, so that to all intents and purposes the said movable jaw is practically stationary when the wrench is in operation. As a result of this construction, the wrench may be worked more rapidly,
as the movable jaw is kept in true or proper working position at all times.
I claiml. In a pipe-wrench, the combination, with a handle provided with an enlarged stationary head having at its front side a recess and a hub, of a movable jaw pivoted to said hub and having its under side normally resting upon the bottom of said recess, a grippingband secured to said movable jaw and adapted to be engaged with said head, and one or more ears on the movable jaw to abut against the stationary head and limit the movement of the movable jaw in its backward movement when the handle is turned to take a new bite or hold on a pipe, the bottom of the said recess acting to limit the forward movement of the movable jaw, substantially as described.
2. In a pipe-wrench, the combination, with a handle provided with an enlarged stationary head having at its front side a recess h and a hub h', of a movable jaw pivoted to said hub and having its under side resting upon the movable head and its rear end provided with an ear to engage said head, and a gripping-band secured to said movable jaw and adapted to be engaged with said head, substantially as described.
3. In a pipe-wrench, the combination, with a handle provided with an enlarged stationary head integral with said handle and provided at its front side With recesses b and a hub b and bifurcat'ed at its rear side to form sides a2 a3, provided with recesses having shoulders a, of a movable jaw consisting of two pieces b3 b4, pivoted to the hub b and normally resting on the bottom of said ren cesses and provided with ears to engage the pins b7 to enter the recesses in the sides a2 a3, Io substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ED/VARD O. ELY.
