CORSET-STEEL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,242, dated February 6, 1894.

To a/ZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARL SCROLL, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Gppingen, Wrtemberg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements tions of the zig-zag being-united by curved portions to form a means of securing or otherwise fastening the corset steel in the corset, and a square cap placed at theextremities of the steel to cover the projecting extremities of the wire which are bent at right angles to the sides of the steel and in the combination and arrangement of `parts hereinafter described and claimed.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure lis a face or plan view of the corset steel, and Fig 2 a vertical section taken on the line m- Fig. l.

In said drawings, the straight portions of the zig-zag of the completed steel are represented by a. and the curved portions, uniting these portions a, are represented by b. These portions a and b all lie in the same plane and form a flat, zig-zag strip, the ends g of which are bent at right angles to the edges or sides of the strip, whilethe portions a are oblique to the same, that is alternately right and left oblique. Over the ends of the corset steel are placed the caps consisting of the portion d covering the ends g of the wire and the two portions e and f at right angles to the portions d and embracing or closing the sides of thev steel as shown in Fig. l thus making the extremities of the steel substantially square.

VThis cap is secured to the corset steel by-simply flattening itdown thereon and forming an indentation h extending into the space be- 5o tween the end g and one of the straight portions a of the zig-zag (see Fig. 2). The wire used is `by preference round in cross section although flattened or angular wire may be used without departing from the spirit of my invention. It will be observed that the steel thus formed possesses sufficient rigidity in a Vertical direction, is sufcient-ly strong and light and is exiblein all directions necessary in steels adapted for stays. It is quickly and 6o The ends or extremities of the steel being protected by square caps, there is less danger of penetration of the person in wearing and the ends are less liable to protrude through the covering of the corset after more or less wear.

Having thus described my invention, what 7o I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A corset steel consisting of asingle strip of Wire, the main portion of which is bent into a flat zig-zag form, the straight portions of the zig-zag being united by curved portions and having the extremities of the wire strip bent at right angles to the sides, said extremities 'being protected by square caps attened down upon the Wire to embrace the extremi- Se ties and a portion of the sides adjacent thereto, substantially as described.
