SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,117, dated February 6, 1894.

Application filed July 31, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEssE M. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slate Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation to an improvement in attachments for school slates, and other articles on which it may be desirable to attach a sponge, cloth, or the like, for cleaning purposes, and it has for its object to provide such devices with a roller attached to a suitable part of the frame of the slate or other article, and to attach to said roller, one end of a cord carrying a sponge or cloth, so that such sponge or cloth, will always be convenient for use, and when not in use, will be automatically carried out of the way.

Fig. 2, is a vertical, longitudinal, sectional view of my improvements removed from the slate, and Fig. 3, is a transverse, sectional view of the same.

Attached tothe frame which in the present illustration is that of a slate frame, is a roller 0, which is journaled in brackets D, at opposite ends, which brackets are provided with base flanges a, and are secured to the frame by screws b, or other suitable attaching devices. One of these brackets, is provided with a studor pin 0, arranged relatively at right angles to the bracket, and is provided at its inner end with a hole (1. The brackets SerialNoASLQlG. (No model.)

are respectively provided on adjacent sides with annular sockets or recesses e, and the roller 0, which is hollow and surrounds the stud or pin 0, has its opposite ends bearing in the sockets or recesses of the brackets, so that theroller may turn therein. The roller is also provided at a sutable point in its length with a hole f, for a purpose which will be presently described.

E, indicates a spiral spring which may be made of steel or other suitable material. This spring which surrounds or partly surrounds a pin or stud c, is secured at one end to said pin or stud, as shown at g, and its opposite end passes through the hole f, of the roller and terminates in a loop or eye It, on the external surface thereof.

F, indicates a cord or string. This cord is secured at one end to the loop or eye h, of the spring, and after passing a sufficient number of times around the roller, has secured to its opposite end a sponge G, a cloth, or the like. By the construction described, it will be seen, that the roller is designed to turn in its bearings and around the stud or pin of one of the brackets, while in such movements, it will invariably act upon the spring, so that as the cord is drawn, in using the sponge, it will turn the roller, and wind or stiffen the spring, thus when the user releases his grasp, on the sponge, the action of the spring will reverse motion of the roller and winding the cord thereon, will carry the sponge out of the way, yet holding it in a convenient location for use.

While I have described very specifically the parts, and their combinations, in the preciseform and location here shown, yet I am aware that many of the parts will permit of modifications and changes without departing from the spirit of my invention, and so far as I am aware, I am the first to provide a spring actuated roller for the attachment of a cord carrying a sponge or the like at the opposite end.

I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction and combination of parts shown, and among some of the changes I might say that one end of the spring need not be carried through the roller but simply fixed to the roller and any means employed for the attachment of the cord. It is also obvious that the form of spring might be changed.

Having described my invention, what I 5 claim is- The brackets having sockets or recesses on their adjacent sides, and adapted to be attached to a slate frame or the like, and one of the brackets having astud or pin, in com- 10 bination with a hollow roller having its ends bearing in the sockets, a spring secured at one end to said stud or pin and at its opposite end to the roller, and a cord carrying a sponge at one end and having its opposite end secured to said roller, substantially as specified.
