APPLIGATIOI rum) mm o 1901 'UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE G. ROOT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.; SIDNEY L. ROOT ADMINISTRATOR OF SAID GEORGE O. ROOT, DECEASED.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 7, 1908.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE 0. R001, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a'specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to advertising devices for use in tramway cars and other vehicles; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction, and which is sure to attract attention; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is an inside view of one side of a part of an ordinary tramway car and showing my improved advertising device, Fig. 2 a view at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 a view of a part of the construction as shown in Fig. 2 and showin the same in section and on an enlarged sea e, and ;Fig. 4 a pers ective view of an advertisement holder whic Iemploy.
It is customary in large cities and towns to provide tramway cars and similar vehicles with rods which are secured to the opposite side portions thereof, near the top thereof, from which are suspended straps for use by those who are unable to obtain seats, and in the practice of my inventionI provide these straps with advertisement holders, the construction of which, and their connection with the straps, being such that the holders may be held in different positions so that a party who takes hold of the strap, together with others in the car or other vehicle may see the advertisement holder in different positions and be able .to read an advertisement placed on both sides thereof.
In the drawing forming part of this specification I have shown at a the inside of one side of the body portion of a car, with which is connected a rod 1) which ranges longitudinally of the car, said rod being connected with the side of the car by means of bracket arms b and suspended from the rod 1) are a plurality of hanger straps d. The straps d are folded to form a long depending loop (Z and the end portions thereof are connected at (i one extreme end being longer than the other, and the shorter end is provided with a buckled through which the longer end (i is passed after being first passed around the rod b, this construction being that usually employed, but my invention is not limited to any particular. means for connecting the strap (1 with the rod 1).
In the practice of my invention I secure to the inner face of one of the sides of the loop (1 and at a predetermined distance above the bottom of said loop as shown at d a supplemental strap 6 which is formed into a supplemental loop 0 which is, shorter than the loop 01 and the longer end of the strap 6 is provided with a loop, ring or eye 6 and at a predetermined point on the other portion of the loop (1 and above the point of attachment of the strap (2 at d I provide the strap (1 with a transverse loop, ring or eye f. I also provide an advertisement holder 9, which, in the construction shown, is rectangular in form and provided at one end with a yoke-shaped extension g the side portions of which are formed into rings or eyes 9 and the ends of the side parts of the yoke shaped extension q are brought together at g to form a cross connection g for the separate side portions of the yoke-shaped extension g of the advertisement holder 9.
In practice the side of the strap (1 with which the loop, ring or eye f is connected is passed through the yoke-shaped extension g of the advertisement holder g, and a pin it is passed through the rings or eyes 9 and through the loop f, and the cross connection 9 of the yoke-shaped extension g is passed through the loop, ring or eye 6 with which the strap 6 is provided.
The end part 9 of the yoke-shaped extension 9 of the advertisement holder is set at an angle to the part 9 in the form of construction shown, as are also the eyes or rings 9 and the normal position of the advertisement holder is shown at the left of Fig. 1 and in Fig. 2 in full lines.
If a party desires to take hold of the strap to support himself in the car, the fingers are passed through the loop 6 and said loop 6 being shorter than the loop d the longer side portion of the said loop e is pulled down, and thus throws the advertisement holder (1 into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and in full lines at the right of Fig. 1.
In practice a single advertisement may be placed on the advertisement holder g, as shown in Fig. 1, said advertisement being on both sides of said holder, or separate advertisements may be placed on the opposite sides of said holder.
Althou h I have described the advertisement hohIer g as consisting of a frame formed from a wire orrod bent into the required shape, it will be apparent that the body portion of the holder may be made in any desired manner, and of any referred material, all that is necessary in t 's connection being that the said body portion of the holder be provided at one end with a loop or yoke-shaped GXtGIISIOIIg When the advertisement holder g is made of wire as shown in the drawing, the body portion thereof may be filled in or covered with any desired material and the advertisement, or advertisements, may be connected therewith or secured thereon in any desired manner, and the said advertisements may consist of labels or cards pasted onto or otherwise secured to or connected with the body ortion of the holder.
By means 0 my im rovement I provide an advertising device or tramway cars or similar vehicles which is sure to attract attention, both by reason of its location and the fact that it may be thrown into different positions so that either side thereof may be seen, this operation being automatically 1performed when a party takes hold of the anger strap; and while I have shown and described a specific form of construction for accomplishing this result, it will be apparent that changes therein, and modifications thereof, may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention 'ior sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hanger strap for cars adapted to be suspended from a suitable support overhead, said strap being formed into a loop, and an advertising device connected with said loop, and adapted to be thrown into different positions by a pull on the lower end of said oop so that eit er side of said device may be seen.
2. A hanger strap for tramway cars and other vehicles provided with two loops, one of which is within the other and shorter than the other, and an advertisement holder pivotally connected with one side of the longer loop and with which one side of the inner and shorter loop is also connected, said advertisement device being adapted to be thrown into different positions in the operation of taking hold of and releasing the inner loop.
3. A hanger strap for tramway cars and other vehicles, said strap being formed into a depending loop, a supplemental strap connected With the inner face or one side of said loop above the bottom thereof and formed into another loop within the first named loop and shorter than said first named loop, and an advertisement holder pivotally connected with one side of the outer and longer loop at a predetermined distance above the bottom thereof and provided with a member with which one side of the inner loop is connected, whereby in the operation of taking hold of and releasing said loop said advertisement holder is thrown into different positions so as to expose both sides thereof.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 4th day of December 1907.
