UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
JOHN G. REBER AND JOHN L. SEFTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,033, dated February 6, 1894.
Application filed April 26,1892. Serial No.430fl44. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN G. REBER and JOHN L. SEFTON, both citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Our invention relates to a box of novel construction designed more particularly for use as an egg case, suitable partitions being fitted into it to form the cells. Its novelty will be herein set forth and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank cut and creased to form our new box; Fig. 2 a perspective view of the same folded into box form; Fig. 3 a perspective view of the complete egg case open; Fig. 4 a perspective View of the same closed; and Fig. 5 a perspective view of the case with the partitions removed and the case partly pressed into fiat shape for shipment.
The same letters of reference are used to indicate identical parts in all the figures.
The blank is creased upon the lines A, B, O, D, E, F, G, H, I, and J, and out upon the lines K, L, M and N. Each of the flaps O, P, Q and R is also provided with a diagonal crease S. The flaps O Q are also each provided with a slit T and the flaps P R with co-operating hooks or tongues U. The portions of the blank V W, between the creases A B and O D, respectively, are also provided with slits X which co-operate with the hooks U on the flaps P R in the manner hereinafter described. In folding the box from this blank the side flaps, composed of the flaps O Q and intermediate portion Y, and the flaps P R and intermediate portion Z, are first brought up to vertical position, hinging on the creases E F. Then the flaps P R are bent to the left across the middle portion of the blank along the creases B C, the end portions of the blank bent upward along the creases B C, and the hooksU passed through the slits X. Then the flaps 0 Q are bent to the right across the blank and engaged by their slits T with the flaps P R. Thus the ends of the flaps O P are attached to the wall Vof theblank, and the ends of the flaps Q R to the wall W, forming the box shown in Fig. 2. A set of the usual multiple partitions A is then fitted into the box, to form the egg cells, as seen in Fig. 3. To close the case the narrow side flaps B O are first bent inward and,
downward to horizontal position, and then the cover flaps D E are bent down over the case and fastened together in any desired We are aware that paper boxes have here tofore been folded from a blank creased and out upon approximately the lines shown in the drawings, and that in such boxes the flaps corresponding to the flaps O,'P, Q and B were provided with diagonal creases to enable the box to be collapsed and pressed down flat in a manner similar to that indicated in Fig. 5, but in such prior boxes with which. we are familiar the flaps 0 P and Q B were not long enough for their ends to overlap each other, respectively, and had to be secured to the walls V W of the box separately, by pasting or otherwise. In our box the ends of the flaps overlap each other, and a single fastening device serves to fasten each two of them to the wall of the box. The overlapping fiaps also form a second wall for the box, within the Walls V W, thereby reinforcing those two sides and strengthening the box.
Having thus fully described ourinvention, we claim 1; The herein d escribed collapsible box folded from a single blank and composed of the main bottom portion, the side walls V Wand end walls Y Z bent upwardly therefrom along the lines B O and E F, the cover .flaps D E hinging upon the side Walls V W, and the flaps O P Q R hinging upon the end wallsY Z and provided with the diagonal creases S, two of said flaps being provided with tongues U co-operating with slits X in the side walls V W of the box, and the opposite flaps being provided with slits T, said tongues and slits operating to fasten the flaps to the side walls of the box in the manner set forth.
2. The herein described eg -case: composed of a collapsible box folded from a single blank and having the main bottom portion, the side walls V W and end walls Y Z bent upwardly therefrom, the cover flaps D E hinging upon the side wallsV W, the flaps O P Q R hinging upon the end walls Y Z and provided with the diagonal creases S, two of said flaps being provided with the tongues U
