SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 622,274, dated April 4, 1899.
Application filed June 4, 1898. Serial No. 682,594. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE F. W. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison, in the State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this to specification.
My invention relates particularly to the lids of paper boxes, although applicable to the bodies of comparatively shallow boxes.
It has for its object, primarily, the produc- I 5 tion of a box-lid which can be folded into shape from a single blank in such a way that its folded flaps serve to maintain it in proper form without the necessity for any pasting or the employment of any other fastening devices, and, secondarily, the making of such box-lid collapsible, so that it may be pressed into fiat condition for the purpose of storage or shipment in compact form.
The novelty of my invention consists in the form of the blank from which the box or lid is folded and in the manner of folding it into and securing it in form.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of. the blank from which the lid 0 is folded in flat condition; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the blank partly folded into lid form; Fig. 3., a view corresponding to Fig. 2, with the parts as they appear at a further stage of the folding operation; Fig. 4, a per- 3 5 spective View of the completely-folded lid in condition for use, and Fig. 5 a plan view of the lid shown in Fig. 4 collapsed or pressed into flat condition for storage or shipment.
The same letters of reference are used to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The blank is out to the form indicated by the solid lines in Fig. 1 and creased, as indicated by the dotted lines in said figure, forming a rectangular central portion A, which constitutes the top of the lid (or bottom of the box) when the blank is folded into-lid or box form, and two main side flaps B B and two end flaps C G, forming, respectively, the
sides and ends of the completed lid or box B. The side flaps B B hinge upon the part A along the creased lines a a, and each is provided with two longitudinal creases b c, the edge portions of the flaps beyond the creases c c forming narrow longitudinal flaps a: as, hereinafter more particularly referred to. The end flaps O O hinge upon the part A along the creased lines (1 d, and each is provided with two longitudinal creases e f, the edge portions of these flaps O 0, beyond the creases f f, forming narrow longitudinal flaps y y, hereinafter more particularly referred to. Each of the end flaps is also provided at its opposite ends with diagonal creases g g, these, however, being provided for the purpose of enabling the completed lid to be collapsed or pressed into flat form, as hereinafter explained, and not being essential to the fold ing of the blank into lid form.
Each of the end flaps O O is provided at each of its ends with two longitudinal extensions D E, separated from each other by a slit or open space h. These slits or open spaces h communicate by slits i, cut in the bodies of the end flaps O O, with the points of junction of the diagonal creases g g, the function of which slits i i is to facilitate the collapsing of the completed lid along the creases g g.
The blank above described is folded into lid or box form in the following manner, having reference, for simplicity of description, to a single end and side of the box at one time: The end flap O is first folded over upon the creased line e and pressed down fiat upon the blank, as shown at the lower end of the view in Fig. 2. Then it is bent to vertical position along the creasedlines d f and the end flaps or extensions D E bent inward to position along the creased lines a a, as shown at the upper end of the View in Fig. 2. The side flap B is next bent up to vertical position along the creased line a, as shown at the right-hand side of the view in Fig. 3. Then pressed fiat against the part Aand atits 0pposite ends overlapping and resting upon the inner edge flap y of the end flap C, as shown at the upper left-hand corner of the view in Fig. 3. Then the parts have been brought to this position at all four corners of the lid, the edge flaps y y of the end flaps O C will be bent upward and their extremities withdrawn from beneath the edge flaps 0e 00 of the sides B B, the ends of said side flaps 0cm being bent upward or yielding sufficiently to permit the withdrawal of the ends of the end flaps y y from beneath them, and then the end flaps y 'y will be pressed down flat again upon the part A and their opposite ends be made to overlap and rest upon the ends of the side flaps a: w, as clearly shown in Fig. 4:.
lVhen the blank is folded into lid or box form in the manner above described, it will be seen that the extensions D E of the ends of the box are inelosed between the folded sides of the box and serve to support the latter in vertical position relative to the part A, while the edge flaps y y of the ends 0 C, overlapping at their opposite ends the ends of the side flaps m w, serve to hold the side flaps B B in folded condition, with the extensions D E confined in them. The sides B B thus serve to hold the ends 0 O in position by confining the extensions D E of the ends, while the ends O C serve to hold the sides B B in position by the engagement of their flaps y y with the side flaps 00 0c.
The completed lid or box shown in Fig. 4= may be collapsed and pressed out fiat by pressing its ends 0 O outward and downward and its sides B B inward and downward, as shown in Fig. 4, the ends C O folding upon themselves along the diagonal creases g, and the slits t in the ends 0 C permitting sufficient freedom of movement to facilitate such folding of the ends upon themselves.
The purpose of the extensions D E of the end flaps C C being to connect the ends with the sides and support the latter, it will be understood that this function might be performed to a certain extent by a single extension D upon each end of each flap C and the extensions E be omitted; but the employment of both extensions D E gives additional strength and support to the folded lid or box and is desirable.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim-- 1. The herein-described box-blank, composed of the rectangular central portion A, sides B B and ends 0 O, the sides B B being provided with the longitudinal creases b c, and the ends 0 0 being provided with the longitudinal creases e f and the diagonal creases g, and extensions D, as and for the purpose described.
2. The herein-described box-blank, composed of the rectangular central portion A, sides B B and ends C O, the sides B B being provided with longitudinal creases b c, and the ends 0 G being provided with the longitudinal creases e f and diagonal creases g, and end extensions D E separated by the slits or open spaces 72. communicating by the slits t' with the points of junction of the creases g g, as and for the purpose described.
The herein-described box-lid, composed of the top A, sides B B, and ends 0 G, folded in the manner described from a singe blank, the sides B B confining in their folds extensions D of the ends 0 O and being provided with edge flaps 0c 00 resting against the top A and overlapped and confined at their opposite ends by the edge flaps y 3 of the ends 0 0, whereby the sides B B serve to hold the ends 0 C in position by confining theirextensions D, while the ends 0 O serve to hold the sides 13 B in position by the engagement of their flaps 1 y with the flaps a; a: of the sides B B, substantially as described.
L The herein-described collapsible box-lid, composed of the top A,- sides B B and ends 0 O, the latter provided with the diagonal creases g and slits 2', the sides B B confining in their folds extensions D E of the ends C O, and being provided with edge flaps ma: resting against the top A and overlapped and confined at their opposite ends by edge flaps y y of the ends 0 C, substantially as described.
