UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I CHARLES E. BARKER, OF MAHASKA, KANSAS.
HARN ESS ATTACTM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,750, dated January 30, 1894.
I Application filed uly 26, 1893. Serial 110.481.500. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. BARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mahaska, in the county of Washington and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and use-. ful Improvements in Harness Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to harness attachments, and has for its object to provide simple and efiective means for securing in a removable manner the hitching or tieing strap of harness as well as the lines or reins in their single or double form all adjacent to the line or terret ring.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a front view of the improved attachment shown applied in position. Fig. 2 is a section on the line .r, 00, Fig. 1, to show the interior construction.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts of the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the support of the attachment which is applied to the back band, 2, on 0pposite sides of the base, 3, of the line or terret ring, 4. A spring arm, 5, presses against the outer side of the line or terret ring, 4:, and on the opposite side of said line or terret ring, is a longer spring arm, 6, which stands away some distance from said line or terret ring.
The support or body, 1, is heldto the back strap, 2, by a soft metal clip, 7, at one end and at the opposite end by a similar fastening, 8, and said support or body has in connection therewith a box, 9, which contains a flat coiled spring, 10, having an outer arm, 11, attached thereto, which is located adjacent to the spring arm, 5. The spring, 10, draws the arm, 11, closely to the arm, 5, for the purpose of holding the hitching or tieing strap and the arm, 6, is adapted to hold the lines or reins after being doubled once tightly against the terret or line ring, 4. After the lines or reins are doubled, they are passed through a ring, 12, suspended from the back band. By this means, it will be seen that convenient and simple means for holding the lines or reins are provided and prevent the same from. dropping down, and also have similar means for engaging the hitching or tieing strap.
The device is readily applied to harness already in use as well as to that which is being manufactured, and serves a useful purpose by obviating a multiplicity of inconveniences which have heretofore been encountered.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a harness attachment of the class described, the combination with a back band and terret or line ring of a support or body, 1, having a box with a spiral spring therein, an arm, 11, having its lower ring connected to said spiral spring, an arm, 5, adjacent to said arm, 11, and bearing against the terret or line ring, an arm, 6, on the opposite side of the line or terret ring and means for fastening the device in position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES E. BARKER.
Witnesses:
GEORGE H. 0001:, D. A. VANDERPOOL.
