SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,302. dated May 4, 1886.

To all, whom it 11mg/ concern:

Be it known that we, JOHN L. VVOODWARD and RICHARDSON MONTFORT, citizens ol' the United States, and residents of Butler, county of Taylor, State ol'Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in IVhiflletrees, of which the following is al'ull and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.

Our invention consists in a whiffletree having metal bands or clips provided with swivel hooks or rings, whereby direct connection is made between vehicles and the pnllinggear thereof.

The object of our invention is to dispense with the use of lap-rings or other connecting devices,and to avoid the annoyance and delay resulting therefrom in the attaching and detaching of same.

Our invention is clearly shown in the accompanying drawings, whereon Figure 1 is a perspective View of same as when ready for use. Fig. 2 is a detached sectional view 'of the central band or clip, and Fig. 3 a like view of one of the end bands or clips, the two latter figures having portions ofsame brokenv away in order to show the swivel-connection thereof.

Each band or clip is provided at one side of same with a projection, d, and at the opposite side with a perforation, c. In a direct line with this perforation the projection d is provided with a hole to receive the swivel-endfof a ring bolt or hook, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The inner end ofthe ring bolt or hook is provided with a head, h, either before being inserted in position or afterward. If before, the

holes c should be made large enough for the passage of same,and the eyes or hooks should detree by means ofscrewsinserted in the perforations e, as shown at lc in Fig. l.

Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A metal band or clip provided at one side with a hole for the reception of a fastening-screw, and directly opposite saine with an annular projection, as described, in combination with an eyebolt or hook, the shank of which is adapted to be secured within the annular projection, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. rlhe combination of awhifdetree provided with central and end bands, each having a perforation in one side thereof, and directly opposite same with an annular projection, the eyebolt and hooks adapted to be secured within said annular projections, and the screws whereby the bands are fastened to the whiffle tree, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified. j
