Be it known that I, ROBERT MARION FRANKs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fords Ferry, in the county of Crittenden and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cow, Calf, and Colt Weaners; and I do declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention consists in a combined cow, calf, and colt Weaner, and has for its object the provision of a device of this character of simple and inexpensive construction which shall be better adapted `for the purposes for which it is designed, and which shall be readily applicable for animals of dierent` sizes and kinds, the device being by slight change applicable for use on cows which are given to the habit of sucking themselves, as a colt weaner and as a calf weaner.

The novel features of my invention will be hereinafter fully described, and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, in which the same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several igures, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device applicable for use on a cow or as a calf weaner, showing the various parts in their operative positions. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view. Fig. 3 shows the device. applied as a colt Weaner. Fig. 4. is a view representing a slight modification of the device which will be hereinafter referred to.

Referring to Fig. l, A indicates a strap or cord adapted to be secured in position around the horns of a cow, said strap passing through a loop a mounted on the end of an adjustable support, B, which latter is composed of two sections, B', B2, one of which B is provided with a longitudinal series of perforations b, and 4the other section B2 of which is provided with a loop h' adapted to receive the end of section B and with a perforation b adapted to receive a headed pin b2 which passes through one of the perforations in the section B', whereby the length of the support B may be varied to suit different animals, as will be readily understood. This supportB extends down over the front of the animals head and is provided atits lower end with a short strap b3 having a buckle and forming a loop which engages an eye c centrally formed at the upper edge of the nose piece O. This nose pieceis, as shown formed of a rectangular piece of sole leather provided at its center and at each side with short transverse straps c secured to itsV trude beyond the nose of the animal, as

shown. To secure this band D more firmly in position I have shown the straps c as perforated for the passage of the spurs CZ through (see Fig. 3) but this is not essential to my invention. A second thong or band E similar to band D is also provided, this latter having a series of loops e on its rear face, to admit of the passage of a strap E which is threaded through the loops c3 of the nose piece and through the loops e; the strap E being provided with a buckle whereby it serves as a means of securing the nose piece about the muzzle of the animal.

F and F indicate throat and neck straps which hold the device in position.

Thus it will be seen that when the device is applied to a cow, the two species of spurs will project forward and upward from the nose of the animal and provide an effective guard against sucking.

Vhen it is desired to use the device on a calf or colt it is only necessary to remove the band E by withdrawing the strap E from the loops, and then replace said strap, and also remove the support B, when the device will present the appearance seen in Fig. 3; it being desirable to remove the spurs from the front of the nose piece to prevent the calf or colt from hurting the other animals when feeding at a trough.

Gr indicates thecoupling link, the upper IOO end of which is slipped over a central spur of the upper. band, While its lower end is slipped over a central spur of the lower band D, and serves as an additional means to hold the two spurred bands together. It can be easily placed in position by loosening the belt E.

In the construction seen in Fig. 4 the same principle is embodied, excepting that in lieu of making the spurs removable I provide each of them at the upper end with an eye which is threaded over a wire G having loops g formed in it forholding said eyes in position. The main portions of the spurs extend parallel to one another to the forward edge of the nose piece, where they are also secured in loops h in a second wire H. Beyond the nose piece the spurs are alternately turned up at right .angles to their main portions, so that one series of spurs projects forward in the plane of the nose piece while the second series projects outward at right angles thereto. This form of my invention is applicable for use on cows which have formed the habit of sucking themselves, like the complete device as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, but it may be made with the spurs all projectingdownin one plane for use as a calf or colt weaner. j

l do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form of the device as herein shown, as it is obvious that many changes and alterations may be made therein without material departure from the principles of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination, of the nose piece adapted to be secured about the muzzle of the animal, carrying projecting spurs, and having the central eye c at :its upper edge, and the removable, rigid, adjustable, holder consisting of the rigid upper section B having the retaining strap A at its upper end and having the longitudinal series of apertures, the headed locking pin b2, and the lower rigid section B2, having the loop b and the aperture bx, and having at its lower end the attaching device b3; substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of the removable holder, the nose piece having two series of loops on its outer face, the bandD provided with spurs and secured in one of said series of loops, the removable band E also provided with spurs and having aseries of loops on its under side, and a strap passing through the loops on said band E and through the other series of loops on the nose piece, said strap being adapted to be secured about the muzzle of the animal; substantially as set forth.

3l The combination,of the removable holder, the nose piece and a strap adapted to secure the same about the muzzle of the animal, a band secured across the lower part of the nose piece and having downwardlyprojecting spurs, and a removable band detachably secured across the nose piece, and having outwardly extending spurs; substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
