s. STEARLY.
CALP WEANEB.
No. 433,751. Patented Aug. 5, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL STEARLY, OF LIVERMORE, COLORADO.
CALF-WEAN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,751, dated August 5, 1890. Application filed January 2, 1890. Serial No. 335,660. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL STEARLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Livermore, in the county of Larimer and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oalf-WVeaners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved calf-weaner; Fig. 2, a similar View of a modification of the device.
In the drawings annexed, O designates the nose strap or band, the ends of which are con; neeted together by a buckle, in order that different-sized animals may be accommodated; A, the cheek or head straps, also provided with a buckle to render them adjustable, and connected to opposite sides of the nose- .strap, and B the brow-band and throat-latch ieombined, which is also provided with a Ibuckle to enable it to be fitted to differentlsized heads, and which is adj nstably secured to the cheek-straps at the point of intersection by means of leather clips a a whereby it may be readily moved up and down on the said cheek-straps to accommodate differentsized heads. or headstall, and the particular advantage of their arrangement is that they can be readily adjusted so as to fit diflferent-sized animals.
The invention can be as readily used upon a cow or colt as upon a calf, although it is particularly designed for the latter.
The nose-band may be spikeless, as shown in Fig. 1, or it may be provided with spikes or staples, as shown in Fig. 2, in which latter case a band or plate I) will be secured to its under side to prevent dislodgment or dis placement of the spikes or staples. Swung to the upper. portion of the nose-band by means of rings or loops 0 are two depending plates or pieces F, which are preferably approximately triangular in shape and slightly concavo convex, the concave faces being turned inward. These swinging plates may be constructed of leather or other material, and are provided with sharpened spikes or staples of a suitable length.
It will be observed that when the calf or other animal lowers its head to graze or feed the spiked sections F will automatically swing These bands compose the halter forward a suffieient distance to be entirely out of the way; but when the animal raises its head these spiked sections will rest lightly against its mouth and nose, so that in case it attempts to suck its mother the sharpened spikes will prick her teats or udder and coinpel her to refuse it.
In lieu of the sectional plates F, I may use a single concavo-convex plate of leather or metal, as shown in Fig. 2, and, if desired, I may provide the same with perforations to permit the animal to breathe freely. When leather is used for these plates, I prefer to use staples asspurs, the sharpened limbs of the staples being driven through the leather and then spread slightly to hold them in place and prevent their'accidental withdrawal. When metal plates are employed, I prefer to use shouldered spikes and strike up or rivet their inner ends to prevent withdrawal.
This invention provides a simple and cffectual weaning device which may be applied I to heads of different sizes, and which will not interfere in the least with the feeding and breathing of the animal wearing it.
. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is.-
1. Th'ecombination of the adjustable noseband, the adjustable cheek-straps secured to the nose-band, the adjustable combined browband and throat-latch adjustably attached to the cheek-straps so as to slide up and down thereon, and a swinging plate attached to the nose-band and provided with spurs, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a nose-band O, of the adjustable cheek-straps, the adjustable combined brow-band and throat-latch 13, se cured to the cheek-straps by clips at a. and adapted to slide longitudinally thereon, and a pair of independent curved plates F F, hung loosely to the said nose-band O by means of rings 0 0, these plates being provided with outwardly-projecting spikes, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- SAMUEL STEARLY.
