Description

Witnesses Y invenmt a 1W A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
ALBERT M. DEXTER, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN NECKTIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,299, dated December 5, 1865.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT M. DEXTER, ot Philadelphia, in the county ot'Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented a new and Improved Method of Constructing Gentlemens Neckties, and also a new and improved mode of fastening the same to the collar-button 3 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure lisa front view, A A being a portion of the collar, and B B the knot.
Fig. 2 is a back view; C, the form; B B, portions of the knot; D, the metallic hook, and E the button.
Fig. 3 is a view of the form marked C, a a. a being` the holes by means of which the hook is fastened to the form.
Fig. 4 is a view ot' the hook marked D, a a' a being portions of the plate turned outward by first cutting th rough the metal on three sides, which, being thrust through the holes in the form corresponding and pressed down firmly hold the hook and form together.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section; F, a portion of the shirt-binding3 D D, the hook; E, the but-- ton; G, the form; A, the collar, and B the knot.
The invention consists, first, in combining` a thin metallic or other plate (near the size and shape of Fig. 3) with pasteboard'or other inaterial, of similar dimensions in the construction 0f the form, which, from its nature, will remain in any curve desired, thus keeping the collar in its proper' position without the necessity of passing anything` round the neck; second, in providing the tie with a hook of metal or other suitable material (marked D in Fig. 2) in such a manner as to secure more convenience and durability than any of the heretoforeknown methods of fastening similar ties.
To enable others skilled to use Iny invention in the construction of neckties, I give the following directions:
I first provide a thin metallic plate, near the size of Fig. 3, with three holes in it near the middle, as at a a' a. I then cut two pieces of pasteboard or other material of similar dimensions, and with the holes corresponding with those in the plate. I next provide the hook of a thin metallic plate ve-eighths of an inch in width by one and three-eighths long, or of any other desired dimensions, and having fitted one end like D in Fig. 2, I next form the ears near the other end by tirst cutting through the metal on three sides and then turning out the portion thus cut around. Next, with the metallic plate between the similar ones ot' pasteboard I th rust the ears of the hook through the holes in the plate and pasteboard, and press them down to hold the hook iirmly to the form; but other suitable methods of attachment are obvious. I next bend the hook back, as seen at D D, Fig. 5.
Having thus constructed the form, it is to be bent tothe proper curve for the neck, and may be covered with any desired material, and the knot also of any wishedfor pattern or size, and sewed onto the form near the middle by any person skilled with the needle.
When completed these neckties maybe ot' any desired size or proportions. They may be put on bythe wearer in the following iuanner: tirst, pass the forked end of the hook down over the button, which holds the ends of the collar, then turn either end of the form downward till it may be put underneath the collar; then, by the same process, the second end of the form is thrust underneath the collar, where it will set loosely and securely, and will keep the ends of the collar in their proper places.
The wearer may remove the tie from his neck by reversing the operation of putting it on.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The hook D, in combination with a necktie, substantially as herein described, for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The plate G,in combination with the hook, substantially as herein described, and for the pupose herein specied.
ALBERT M. DEXTER.
