B. WILLIAMS. FRUIT JAR:
No. 512,349. Patented Jan. 9, 1894.
II IZWESSES [7V 7 EW TQQ? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELECTA WILLIAMS, or PAVILION, MICHIGAN.
' FRUIT-JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,349, dated January 9, 1894.
Application filed April 6, 1893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELEGTA WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pavilion, (Vicksburg P. 0.,) county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Fruit-Jar, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of fruit jars, the covers of which are attached to the jars by clamping or otherwise, in lieu of threading the jars and covering and screwing them together.
The object of the invention is to effect a greater utility and convenience, by means of the construction described and claimed below.
In the drawings forming a part-of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view, with parts in vertical section; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a lettered detail from Fig. 1.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawings, A is the jar, the top of which is flanged outward all the way around, as at B. Formed in the top of this flange is a circular groove, into which groove is placeda rubber packing ring, 0. The cover, D, is provided with a circular rib, E, on the under side, which rib-rests on the packing ring 0, and when the cover is clamped down the jar is completely sealed and the packing ring thoroughly protected and held by its groove from displacement. This cover, D, has a circular groove, F, formed in the upper side, over the rib E.
In Fig. 2 is shown a spider, G,'formed with a series of radial legs, having downwardly extending ends, H, which ends are placed in the groove, F, Fig. 1, and is employed to bear down upon the cover.
Serial No. 469|Z72- (No model.)
on to the upper end of the threaded stem, J, is an internally threaded thumb-nut, L, Fig. l. The parts are shown in Fig. 1. ready to clamp the cover down on the jar, which is done by screwing the thumb-nut, L, down firmly on to the spider G, as indicated by the dotted position of the thumb-nut in said figure; which action of course bears down on the .all air from the interior of the jar, which might remain in the jar but for this downwardly extending portion.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot the United States, is
The combination of a jar outwardly flanged at the upper end, said flange being provided ,with a groove in its upper surface, a packingring in said groove, acover provided with the circular rib fitting on to said packing-ring, said cover having a circular groove in the upper side, a spider having a series of arms, the ends of which are adapted to fit into said groove, a jaw adapted to pass on to the cover and the flange of the jar and to catch under said flange, said jaw being provided with an upwardly extending threaded stem, which stem passes loosely through said spider, and a thumb-nut on the end of the stem; substantially as set forth.
In testimony to the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ELECTA WILLIAMS. Witnesses:
N. G. LESLIE, HORACE D. WILLIAMS.
