No. 509,532. Patented Nov. 28, 1893.
00 g 1 m th 1 1 =S i k0 lave/7065 7 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILHELM ERNST I-IARTMANN, OF cAssEL, GERMANY.
COMBINED LETTER AND BREAD BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,532, dated November 28, 1893.
Application filed May 1, 1893- Serial No. 472,643. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILHELM ERNST HART- MANN, of Cassel, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented a new and useful Combined Letter and Bread Box, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of the present invention is to provide a letter box, capable of being used at the same time as a bread box, of the following kind, as illustrated in the annexed drawings in which- Figure 1 represents such a box in front view. Fig. 2 shows the box in longitudinal section.
The box is provided with an opening f in the shape of a long slit for letters and the like and to receive these letters I provide a receptacle a within the box directly beneath the openingf. This part a, is secured to the door and has a pivoted bottom plate I). In rear of the opening fis a second opening f for printed matter which falls first upon a defiector dand from thence to asecond deflector d and thence to the bottom and these deflectors may be provided with plates of glass as shown at cwith sharp edges to prevent abstraction of the contents of the box. Alarge opening covered by the cover 70 kept normally closed by a spring 6 admits larger articles to the box and the deflector cl serves to deflect the articles admitted through this opening to the bottom of the box. The edge of the plate his provided with a sharp flange as at 70 to prevent the insertion of the hand without inury.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A combined letterand bread receptacle comprising the boxhavinga flat top and open front, a door hinged at the lower end closing said open front, a letter compartment carried by said door open at both ends with a pivoted plate 12 closing its lower end, a slit in the fiat top with a deflecting plate for directing letters into the compartment, an opening for printed matter in rear of said slit, a spring plate opening inwardly in rear of said opening and deflecting plates located below said opening and spring plate and provided with surfaces of glass having sharp edges substantially as described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
WILHELM ERNST HARTMANN.
