UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
ORA E.SEANEY,.OF FORT WAYNE, INDIANA.
FORMER FOR BU RIAL-ROBES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,846, dated November 14, 1893. Application filed May 18, 1893- Serial No. 474,705. (No model.)
. To all whom it may concern:
-- Be it known that LORA E. SEANEY, a citia zen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of. Allen and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Former for Burial-Robes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in burial robes or'shrouds; the objects in view being to provide a form constructed of suitable material and adapted to be conveniently applied to dead bodies without removingthem from their caskets and to give to the same a proper shape or form regardless of any wasting of the body that may have occurred by reason of any disease that the deceased may have died from. g y
With these and other objectsin view the I invention consists in a form adapted to fit the upper' portion of the body and provided with arm-holes, the same being constructed .rear perspective. 'Fig. 3 is a' detail of the of stifi resilient materialas buckram and having at proper points transversely arranged spring wires and open from top to bottom, whereby it may be slipped over the arms of the corpse and will snugly fit about the body thereof.
Referring to the drawings:-Figure l is a perspective view of my invention, the same having a shroud applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a form to which the shroud is applied. Fig. 4
sectional view of the form.
-Lik numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings;
In practicing my invention I mold in a single piece, or as herein shown, in three sec tions, the frame 1 designated to conform to the frame consists of a front-section 2 and two rear quarter-sections 3, which are joined at their front edges to the front-section by means of side seams 4 extending from the hips to the arm-holes, 5, for the production of which latter the sections 2 and 3 are cutout. The frame is preferably molded of buckram or some kindred material having an inherent 5 stiffness and resiliency, and the edges may be provided with a. binding 6. Across the bust and waist wire stifieners or clasps 7, are
a removal. of the corpse from the casket or g any handling whatever, except raising the arms and passing them through the holes. When in position, the :spring wires 7 snugly clasp the body and aidin retaining the former in position on the body.
The former has sewed to it in any convenient manner any suitable shroud or dress,
preferably formed of some light material, and may be of any design desired. As forinstance, in Fig. l, I have shown one design that may be employed, and which when viewed from the front has the same appearance as a complete dress, though, as willlb'e seen, but a small amount of material is employed and every desired elfect is obtained. 1 The shroud, it will be understood, is open in the back from the top to the lower end, at the same point as is the former.
Many ways may be devised for applying the spring wires 7 to the former, but in. the present-instance I-have illustrated one simple means of accomplishing this, thatis by whip-stitching them into position, as at.8.
Having described 7 my invention, what I claim is 4 The herein described former for shrouds, the same being of a shape adapted to fit the upper portion of the body and provided with arm-holes and open from top to bottom, said former being constructed of stiff resilient material, and spring wires arranged transversely and secure'd to the former body, to
clasp the'same upon the body of the wearer substantially as specified.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myown I have hereto affixed my signaturein the presence of two witnesses.
ORA EL'sEANE Witnesses:
EDWARD M. WILSON, H. O. SOHRODER.
