SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,700, dated November 14, 1893.
Applioationfiled July 28, 1893. Serial No. 4SL [N0 model) To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, FREDERICK A. GRUEBEL, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Trays for Classifying and Displaying Gems, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is the construction of a cheap and convenient tray for the assortment and display of jewels and gems, and one that is not easily overturned when placed on a work table, as will hereinafter fully appear.
In the description of the invention which follows, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which-- Figure 1 is atop view of the improved tray. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an endview looking in the direction indicatedby the arrow in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section of Fig. 1 taken on the dotted line 00-00.
Referring to the drawings, A is the plate of the tray, on the upper surface dof which, the gems are displayed. This plate is flat and nearly surrounded by a flange b to prevent the gems falling over the edge of the plate, as the device is moved. At one side, the plate A has a raised portion B in which are sunk V grooves c, d and e,'of difierent widths to hold gems of diiferent sizes. By means of these grooves, the gems can be classified according to size, and after their classification by the gems displayed on the plate A can be poured to any suitable receptacle.
The under side of the tray has a flange f corresponding, preferably, in size to the one I) and serves as a stand for the device. The under side of the tray is used in the assortment and classification of colored gems.
As white is best suited as a background for the display of colored gems, I prefer the tray to be made of white celluloid but any other material may be used provided it is painted white.
I claim as my invention- A tray for classifying and displaying gems, consisting of a plate having its under side provided with a flange projecting downward and forming abase upon which the said tray rests, and its upper surface provided with an upward extending flange, a raised portion on one side of the tray provided with V-shaped grooves of different widths in which the gems are classified, a flat surface at one side of the raised portion in which the gems. are displayed, and aspout at one end of the tray to permit of the gems being poured out of the tra y FREDERICK A. GRUEBEL. Witnesses:
