ALBERT LICHTNER, OF.NEW YORK, N. Y.
SKIRT-MARKING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1915.,
Application filed September 29, 1914. Serial No. 864,120.
To all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT LICIITNER, a
citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirtli larking Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for marking the bottoms of skirts so as to facilitate the trimming thereof and regulate the height thereof from the floor, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class, whereby the bottom portion of the skirt may be quickly and easily marked at a predetermined distance from the floor so as to facilitate the trimming of said skirt to make the same of the same height from, or distance from the floor at all points.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specilication, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the arm 0 having a longitudinal movable forwardly and backwardly throughseparate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of the device on the line ll of Fig. 3 and showing the method of its operation; Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a partial section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and, Fig. 4 a sectional plan view of the device.
in the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a a part of a skirt to be marked and, in the practice of my in vention, I provide a baseboard or support 6 having an upright back member 6 consisting, in the construction shown, of a plate. or board having backwardly curved side edges 6 and the baseboard or support I) is'provided on one end portion thereof and forwardly of the back member with a standard b the front side of which is provided with a scale 6 which represents inches and fractions thereof and as shown in Fig.2.
Adjustably movable on the standard 6 is a supplemental support 0, and said supplemental support 0 ranges transversely of the baseboard or support I) and parallel with the back member b and is made adjustable on said standard by means of a set screw 0 The supplemental support a is provided centrally of its front side with a projecting slot 0, and
sheet metal or the supplemental support are two rods cl on which front ends of which, in the construction shown, fit in recesses c in the supplemental support 0, and the rear ends of which bear on a transverse plunger cross head (1 secured to the rear ends of the plunger rods d, and parallel with the supplemental support 0, and in the same horizontal plane, and adapted to bear on the back member 6 Connected with the plunger cross head d in the construction shown, are two guide rods 6 which pass loosely through the supplemental support 0 and the front ends of which project forwardly of said supplemental support as clearly shown. Placed above and below the arm 0 of the supplemental support 0 and at the front of said support are crank levers f and which are similar in form, and which consist of longer arms f and g and shorter crank arms f and g and the longer arms 7 and g of said levers are provided with central slots through which are passed a headed pin or bolt 0 which also passes through the slot 0 in the arm 0 of the supplemental support 0. The springs d normally hold the described parts in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, but by pressing on the crank lever members f and 9 as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4,the levers f and 9 may be manipulated to draw the plunger cross head (Z away from the back member 6 as shown in Fig. 4, and when the lever members f and g are released said parts will assume the position shown in Fig. 1.
The plunger cross head (Z is provided centrally thereof, or approximately centrally thereof, and on the front side thereof, with a horizontal box or casing in in the opposite end portions of which are placed spiral springs b and mounted on the plunger cross head (Z and over the box or casing 71., is a box-shaped other suitable material, and the bottom of which is provided with a lug or projection i which passes downwardly into the boX or casing in, and a screw pin or similar device 2' is passed backwardly through a slot h in the front of said box or casing it and into the lug or projection 2' and with this construction the chalk holder 2' with a piece of marking chalk 9' inserted thereinto may be moved horizontally, as will be readily understood. by taking hold of said chalk holder with the fingers, or thumb and are mounted spiral springs (P, the.
chalk holder 2' composed of .port c is provided centrally, or approxifingers, of one hand and in this way the desired mark may be made on the skirt a as will 'be readily understood; A thumb screw is is passed downwardly through the chalk holder 2' and holds the marking chalk j in position, and the springs k normally hold the chalk holder so that it may be moved laterally in eitherdirection, and said springs? also facilitatethe manipulation of the chalk holder. lhe back of the supplemental supi of which may be employed, and which facilitate the movement of the device over the surface of: the floor, or over a carpet, and in using this device for the purpose specified the 'woman Whose skirt is to be measured puts the skirt on and the marking device is placed on the floor with the back member If within the skirt, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. In placing the device in position in this manner, it is necessary to'withdraw the plunger cross head cl 'by means of the. levers f and 9 so that'the skirt will drop down between said plunger cross head and the back member I2 and when the lever members f and g are' released the plunger cross head d will be iz'orced backwardly and will clamp the skirtbetween the same and the back member 6 at which time av mark may be made upon the skirt by moving the chalk holder '5 laterally, after whichthe leversv f and 9 may be again manipulated so as to'withdraw the plunger cross head (i and the device may be moved around under the skirt to another point, at which time another mark may be made on the skirt, andthis operation may be repeated until a row of marks extending 7 around the skirt havebeen made, after which the skirt may be trimmed or cut off on the ,marked circle andwill-be of exactly the same distance from the floor at all points. The operative-portions of the device or devices connected with the supplemental suppended claims,
port 0 may be adjusted to any desired height on the standard b and a skirt may thus be quickly and easily marked and trimmed, and any desired height or distance from the floor given thereof.
'My invention is not limited to the construction of the various details and parts thereof, as herein shown and described, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the up without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is 2- 1. A skirt marking device, comprising a baseboard or support having an upright back, a supplemental vertically adjustable support mounted in front oi. said back, a transversely arranged cross head mounted between the supplemental support and the back and adapted to bear on said back, handoperated devices for moving said cross head forwardly, and automatic devices for moving it backwardly, said cross head being also provided with a chalk holder movable horizontally thereon.
2. A skirt marking device, involving a main baseboard or support having an upright back, a vertically adjustable supplemental support mounted in front of said back, rods movable forwardly and backwardly through the supplemental support and provided at their rear ends with a cross head adapted to bear on said back, springs mounted on said rods between said supplemental support and said cross head and normally serving to force said cross head backwardly, and devices connected with the front ends of said rods to move them and the cross head forwardly, said cross head being also provided with a horizontally movable chalk holder.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 25th day of September 1914.
ALBERT LICHTNER.
