{No Model.) v v C. N. PARTLO-W. ADJUSTABLE HINGE.
N0.5o'1,242. Patented o0t.z4,1893.-
UNITED STATES :LATENT Fries..
COLUMBUS N. PARTLOW, `OF MOONSHINE, ILLINOIS.
ADJUSTABLE HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,242, dated October 24, 1893.
Application iiled March 18, 1893- Serial No. 466,671- (NO 11105010 i .To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, COLUMBUS N. PAR'rLow, of Moonshine, in the county of Clark and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of ,the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention has for its object to provide a hinge which may be adjusted to overcome the evil effects of a door sagging, or the settling of foundations, whereby the door is caused to bind along the front edge or bottom, and with these objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinationsV and arrangements of parts, all as will be now described and pointed out particularlyT in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View of a hinge constructed in accordance with my invention, applied to a door. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same showing the adjusting mechanism.
Like letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
In carrying this invention into practice, a strap or leaf A of ordinary or preferred construction is provided, for attachment to the door, and having at the inner end aknuckle, a for the reception of a pin, pintle or equivalent. The co-operating member is formed by a casing or guide B having a base plate C, which is adapted to be secured to the wall or door jamb, as the case may be. This casing is adapted to completely inclose the shank or extended end of the adjustable member E, which latter has a knuckle e for co-operation with the pin, pintle or equivalent held by the knuckle a. To secure strength and rigidity, the adjustable member E is square or rectangular in cross section at the inner end, and the casing is simply channeled on the rear side at G for the reception of such squared portion, but the outer end of the adjustable member is screw threaded, and ts within a round or cylindrical opening formed in the casing, as
a continuation of the channel, as shown at F. The casing as thus constructed, it will be seen entirely incloses the adjustable member, and presents a neat and finished appearance, in fact being hardly distinguishable from an ordinary strap hinge. j
In order to secure the adjustment of the parts, and to hold them rigidly in adjusted position, a transverse opening is formed in the casing intersecting the channel through which the threaded shank of the adjustable member passes, and in this transverse opening I mount a nut H, With which the said threaded shank engages, and wherebythe said adjustable member may be drawn in or forced out as the case requires. The nut in the preferred form, does not project above the tip of the casing. Thus the smooth and symmetrical appearance of the parts is preserved.
The transverse opening it will be observed, is just wide enough to accommodate the nut. Hence when it has been turned to adjust the door properly, the said door is'held rigidly in such adjusted position.
The knuckles may be, and preferably are, given an outward set as is usual in hinges of this character, thus preventing all possibility of the door or the movable leaf coming in contact with the stationary leaf when the door is opened.
The simplicity and strength of a hinge having the casing and adj ustable member constructed as shown, commend the device at once, for the casing may be readily cast in the desired shape and will require but little if any finishing, while the adjustable member needs only to be threaded which is a simple and cheap operation. The squared outer portion of the adjustable member affords all the strength necessary, and in effect forms a rigid connection with the casing so far as lateral strains are concerned.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- In a hinge, such as described, the combination with the casing having the extended base, longitudinal squared channel at the forward end of said casing, open at the rear side and having the cylindrical rearward extension and the transverse opening intersecting the round able member and the cooperatmg leaf hmged extension of the channel, of the adjustable tothe forward end of the adjustable member; member having the squared forward end tsubstantially as described.
ting in the sq uared end ofthe channel and the threaded end Working in the round end of the channel, the nut in the transverse opening cooperating with the threaded end of the adjustl COLUMBUS N. PARTLOW. Witnesses:
WILLIAM W. WILLISON, WM.` H. BLANKENBEKER.
