SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,375, dated October 10, 1893.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH ROss, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belts, &c.; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in ltheart to which 1t appcrtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to lettersof reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates toimprovements in belts, garters, tbc., andespecially to that class of belts adapted for ladies wear, and the invention therefore consists of a belt or other sunllar article of wear,l comprising therein, the construction hereinafter described and particularlyY pointed out in the clauses of the claims.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which similar letters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a front vie'w of myimproved form of belt, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the saine, clearly illustrating the arrangement of the adjusting or sliding pieces and an elastic connection for connecting said pieces to the main belt portion. Fig. 3 is a side View 'of one end of the belt portion and the elastic connection for adj ustably connecting the slidmg plece tothe end of the belt portion. Themain object of my invention is'to de away with the use of the buckle commonly employed for adjusting a belt about the waist, to produce a belt of a neat designwhich is vselt adjustingfand has theA appearance of an ordinary belt, and one, which may be manu- .the main belt portion a are factored cheaply and will; be durable when dsc., and

Said pieces c, as will be seen from Figs. 2 and l 3, can be made of leather or of metal and may be of any configuration or outline. They are preferably made of two 'pieces c' and c2, (see Fig'. 4) which when they are 'secured together, as shown,.form a pocket or socket c3 provided with the mouth c4 in which lthe 'elastic bandv b and the ends a. of said non-elastic band on arranged in sliding arrangement thereto. Of course it will be evident that any suitable form of elastic connection may be used, and instead of the elastic webbing, ordinary springs b2 may be employed, `as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5.

In lieu of the construction of belt or garter, illustrated in Figs.`1, 2, 3, et scqu-itur, the belt Amay' be constructed as illustrated in Figs. 6, 7 and 8. In this form of construction, the sliding pieces c, instead of beingshort, as shown iu Fig. l, are considerably longer.

Said pieces are made pocket-shaped and have secured within the side pieces thereof an elastic connection b to which are attached theportions as. The portions a.3 project slightly from the end of said sliding pieces c and may be connected with a suitable ring e or other ornamental dev-ice, substantially as shown in said Figs. 6, 7 and 8 or instead of such orna-4 mental design e the same may be dispensed' with and but one piece a3 can be usedLto the free ends of which the elastic connectionsb1 are attached',- as willbe clearly understood.y

The devices herein described are applicable to various uses, such as belts, sleeve supporters or garters,vits chief use, however, being that of a ladys belt.l v

The constructionis very simple, it may be cheaply manufactured, and prevents anyliability to tear a'ladys dress. Of course'it will be evident thatvarious means may be used for. attaching the elastic connections to the ends of the belt proper and to the sliding pieces, and said sliding pieces may be vario'usly made, either in one or two pieces, when made of leather, or the parts can be struck up out of sheet metal, or said sliding pieces may be castin metal. Hence, I do not intend to limit myself to anyparticular manner of attaching said elastic connections or to the particular construction of the adjusting or sliding pieces.

l Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein described belt comprising therein, a non-elastic belt portion, elastic connections secured to the free ends of said belt portion,

and adjusting pieces formed like sockets in which the free ends of said elastic connections are secured, said adjusting pieces being of said band and adjusting pieces formed like made to embrace the ends of the main beltportion and entirely covering and sliding over said elastic connections when stretched, and clasping vdevices secured to said adjusting pieces, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

As an improved article of manufacture, the herein described belt comprising therein, a non-elastic belt portion, elastic connections secured to the free ends of said belt portion, and adjusting pieces c, consisting essentially of two pieces c and c2, secured together, asset forth, and forming a pocket or socket c3 in which the free ends of said elastic connections are secured, said' adjusting pieces being made to embrace the ends of the main belt' 4portion and entirely covering and sliding i nections at the ends of said main belt portion ct and pins a2 for securing said elastic connections thereto, aud adjusting pieces c, consisting essentially of two pieces c and c2 secured together` as set forth, and forming a pocket or socket c3, pins b for securing the opposite Aand-tree ends of saidV elastic connections within said adjusting pieces, said adjusting pieces thereby bein-g made to embrace the ends of said main belt portion and entirely covering and sliding over said elastic connec tions when stretched, and clasp-ing devices secured to said adjusting pieces, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

As au improved article of manufacture, abelt comprising therein a non-elasticband, elastic connections secured. to the free endssockets in which the free ends of said elastic connections are secured, said adjusting pieces being made to embrace the ends of said nonelasti'c connections and entirely covering and sliding over said elastici connections when stretched, and means for securing the ends of said adjusting pieces together, substantially as and for the purposes setV forth-.
